ROCKERVILLE, S.D. — By the end of the weekend, 14 dogs with five different specialties will have searched for the girl who ran away from a residential youth home in rural Pennington County last Sunday, Feb. 3. Working with dogs is "truly a team effort," said Tammy Stadel, a dog handler and the team leader of Pennington County Search and Rescue.
ABERDEEN, S.D. — A Sisseton man accused of firing a round from a rifle toward two men in a boat on Red Iron Lake now faces a second felony aggravated assault charge. Gerald Vrchota, 62, is also charged with reckless discharge of a gun, according to court documents. The charges stem from an incident around 4:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at South Red Iron Lake in far northeastern South Dakota, according to the paperwork.
PORCUPINE, S.D. -- A southwest South Dakota woman was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for second degree murder on Tuesday, July 17. Katrina Shangreaux, 30, was also ordered five years of supervised release following her sentence and to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. On August 9, 2016, Shangreaux was charged with killing her own child in July 2016 by “hitting, kicking, and biting him,” court documents state.
LONG VALLEY, S.D. -- A two-vehicle crash in southwest South Dakota Friday morning, March 31, left one man dead and his 9-year-old passenger injured. A 1996 Kenworth T600 semi truck and trailer was southbound on S.D. Highway 73 near Long Valley and was slowing to make a right turn when a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup going the same direction struck the rear of the trailer, according to a news release.
