The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team dropped both its games to Great Plains Athletic foe Northwestern College 11-3, 6-4 Wednesday at McWhirter Field in Mitchell. DWU pitcher Jill Dickson pitched the first three innings of the both games. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits in the first contest and three earned runs on five hits in the second game. Lorissa Loeppky came in as relief for the Tigers in both games.
All nine players in the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball lineup reached base in the first inning of its home opener against Presentation College Wednesday at Drake Field in Mitchell. The Tigers got nine runs in that opening inning, and rode that momentum to a sweep over the Saints 17-4, 4-0. “We needed to play a clean game all the way around and I think we did that,” DWU baseball coach Steve Gust said. “For a young team to have that type of effort, I am pretty pleased.

Four area athletes win at Dan Lennon Invitational By The Daily Republic VERMILLION — Burke/South Central’s Allison Sebern, Freeman’s Cailey Roth, Menno’s Christina Herrboldt and Andes Central’s Joey Evans each claimed individual titles at the Dan Lennon Invitational Tuesday in Vermillion. Sebern won the girls’ 400-meter dash with a time of 1 minute, 1.43 seconds.
The Mitchell Special Olympics cheerleaders won first place in their division at the Special Olympics South Dakota State Basketball Tournament March 14-15 in Pierre. Cheerleaders included Bryton Cummings, Emilie Cummings, Harley Johnson, Mona Skidmore and Sara Tackett. The coaches were Ann Bauman and Karla Cummings. In a separate division, the Mitchell White unified team won second place. Team members were Thy Chum, Ryan Collins, Mike Determan, Laura Feller, Jody Neitzel and Bret Pederson. Unified partners were Mary Hieb, Erik Kurth, Jenna Skinner and Logan Walters.

WATERTOWN — MEGA Gymnastics had two gymnasts qualify for the Region 4 Championships over the weekend. Gymnasts in levels 8-10 can qualify for the regional meet, which is April 10-13 in Fargo, N.D. At regionals, the gymnasts will compete against Sophomore Quinci Herll qualified in Level 9, while junior Rebecca Sadler qualified in Level 8. This was Herll’s second year making the region meet. “I think it’s putting us on the map,” MEGA coach Audra Rew said qualifying two girls to regionals.
