Youth skaters win at first-ever competition

In the Mitchell Skating Academy's first-ever competition, seven skaters earned medals at the Dakota Series Watertown Skate Games Basic Skills Competition on Dec. 6.

In the Mitchell Skating Academy's first-ever competition, seven skaters earned medals at the Dakota Series Watertown Skate Games Basic Skills Competition on Dec. 6.

"It couldn't have gone better," program director Jessica Steidl said. "They're excited to do it again."

The seven skaters -- Hannah Baesler, Ava Laffey, Bayler Larson, Isabella Larson, Erikka Steidl, Anya Woodall and Rachel Ziegeldorf -- earned 17 medals, six of which were first place and five were second place.

Baesler won first in the compulsory and free skate events, Isabella Larson won the compulsory program and Steidl took first in compulsory and interpretive programs. Ziegeldorf finished top her division in compulsory.

MSA's next competition is scheduled for Feb. 28 in Wahpeton, N.D.

Jessica Steidl said the program has continued to grow since school started.

"It's a growing program," she said. "In the last three months, we're getting people to join us on a weekly basis."
