SIOUX FALLS -- A third-quarter surge erased a sluggish first-half performance by the South Dakota State University women’s basketball team on Sunday afternoon.

The strong third quarter was boosted by 10-straight Kerri Young points in the fourth quarter that put the game out of reach and pushed the No. 4-seeded Jackrabbits past No. 5 Oral Roberts 65-50 in the first round of the Summit League tournament at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls.

Young, a senior guard and former Mitchell Kernel, scored game-high 16 points and sparked SDSU’s offense, which sputtered throughout the first half against the Golden Eagles. It was the 21st game this season Young has scored more than 10 points and she surpassed 1,300 career points as the Jackrabbits advanced to face IUPUI in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. on Monday in Sioux Falls.

“You can’t relax and you can’t look over any team,” said Young, who is playing in her fourth Summit League tournament. “This is a game of basketball. Everyone goes on runs, you just need to remain calm.”

In front of 9,419 fans, mostly doned in blue and yellow, the Jackrabbits trailed Oral Roberts 34-31 early in the third quarter. From there, SDSU’s defense shut down the Golden Eagles and went on a 15-1 run to take a 44-35 lead.

“We love it,” Young said about playing in front of the large pro-Jackrabbit crowd. “We just focused on getting open in our half-court offense and being more aggressive. We got a better pace in the second half.”

SDSU (22-7) outscored Oral Roberts 21-13 in final quarter to seal the win and SDSU head coach Aaron Johnston credited the Golden Eagles for pushing his team.

“It was a very challenging win for us,” said Johnston, whose team committed 18 turnovers. “That’s a really good five seed. I’m happy we got a win against a good team.”

The Jackrabbits opened the contest on an 8-0 run, but the Golden Eagles responded with their own 8-0 run to the tie the game up. Oral Roberts took its first lead of the game 19-18 at the 8-minute mark in the second quarter and looked to take a 27-25 lead into halftime, but Young hit a game-tying floater in the lane as the halftime buzzer sounded.

Alongside Young, Madison Guebert added 16 points, Ellie Thompson chipped in 11 points and Clarissa Ober recorded 10 points and 16 rebounds for a double-double. The Jackrabbits went 23-of-44 from the floor (52 percent), 6-of-19 from deep (31 percent) and 13-of-18 from the line (72 percent).

“Their pressure rattled us a little bit,” Johnston said. “The struggles we had were from Oral Roberts playing well. Kerri made some big plays in the second half and Clarissa did too.”

Leading Oral Roberts was Faith Ihim, who finished with 15 points, while Maria Martianez added 14 points and six rebounds. The Golden Eagles went 21-of-57 (37 percent), 3-of-14 from behind the arc (21 percent) and 5-of-9 from the line (56 percent).
