RAPID CITY -- Canton padded its lead on Winner Area in the Class B semifinals.

Canton and Winner Area are once again atop the Class B standings. The C-Hawks have a 42.5 point cushion, scoring 179.5 points compared to the Warriors’ 129 points. Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes (89) is in fourth, as well.

Winner Area sent five wrestlers into the championship match, but dropped three head-to-head matchups with Canton in the semifinals.

Maxton Brozik advanced at 106 pounds, and will face KWLPG’s Kasen Konstanz in the final match. Meanwhile, Kaden Keiser (145) and Sam Kruger (170) each defeated an Elk Point-Jefferson wrestler to move on. Keiser pinned Elk Point-Jefferson’s Skyler Swatek, setting up a match against Howard’s Lane Miller. Kruger won via technical fall against Gavin Jacobs, and he’ll face Canton’s Luke Richardson. At 220 pounds, Preston Norrid will also face a Canton wrestler in the final in Marshall Baldwin.

And at 285 pounds, Achilles Willuweit became Winner’s final championship qualifier when he defeated Canton’s Zach Richardson in overtime. In a rematch of the Region 3B final, Willuweit will face WSWWW’s Quinten Christensen.

Along with Konstanz, KWLPG saw Spencer Hanson qualify for the 182-pound championship match. He narrowly defeated Clark/Willow Lake’s Gage Burke, 3-2. Now, Hanson will go up against McCook Central/Montrose’s Jacobi Krouse after the MCM senior beat Redfield Area’s Corbin Schwartz, 6-4.

Jackson Remmers is the other Fighting Cougar wrestling on Saturday night. His 4-3 win over KWLPG’s Chase Varilek pushed him into the 132-pound title match. He’ll go up against Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington’s Joey Hoverson, who earned his second pin of the state tournament in the semifinals.

At 113 pounds, Hadley Tobin scored the only point in a semifinal match against Philip Area’s Jace Blasius. He’ll face Groton Area’s Dragr Monson in the finals.

Wagner sent Jhett Breen (120) into the championship match, while Burke/Gregory’s Owen Hansen (126) also qualified. Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon’s Jordan Gall pinned KWLPG’s Levi Nightingale in the 195-pound semifinal match.

Foote, Skustad reach Class A state finals

Chamberlain and Mitchell each pushed one wrestler into a Class A championship match.

Mitchell’s Beau Foote took down Pierre’s Preston Taylor, 5-0, to advance to the 285-pound championship. He’ll face Brandon Valley’s Navarro Schunke, who is unbeaten on the season and won the 220-pound title last season as an eighth-grader. Foote was the 285 runner-up in 2019, losing to Chamberlain’s Nash Hutmacher.

Joe Van Overschelde lost to Huron’s Tyson Lien in a 10-2 major decision in the 182-pound semifinals. It is the fifth time Lien has defeated Van Overschelde this season. Wyatt Winter also lost to Brandon Valley’s Owen Warren in the 220 semifinals, losing by fall in 2 minutes, 34 seconds.

Van Overschelde and Winter join Jagger Tyler (126), Brock Sparks (132), Tucker Vilhauer (152) and Tyson Degen (160) in the consolation bracket, beginning at 9 a.m. Central Saturday.

For Chamberlain, top-seeded Gabe Skustad will wrestle for the 145-pound title after defeating Rapid City Stevens’ Bryan Roselles in a 7-3 decision. He faces Pierre’s Tyson Johnson.

Noah Hutmacher dropped a 195-pound semifinal match, losing by fall to Brookings’ Luke Rasmussen in 1 minute, 39 seconds.

Brandon Valley leads the Class A standings with 166 points, followed by Rapid City Stevens (144) and Pierre (113). Mitchell sits in seventh place with 72 pounds. Chamberlain has 49 points to place 10th so far.
