WATERTOWN -- The Mitchell High School wrestling team was dealt its first Eastern South Dakota Conference losses of the season on Thursday.

The Kernels were swept in a triangular, falling to Watertown 51-15 and Brandon Valley 53-26, to drop to 5-2 in conference dual meets and 10-6 overall.

Against Watertown, Mitchell lost the first three matches by major decision before Brandon Sparks beat Cael Sutton in a 10-8 decision at 126 pounds. Kyler Bauder topped Jaxson Waugh in a 7-5 decision at 138, but the Arrows rattled off two pins and a Tyson Degen 7-5 decision at 160 pounds was the final match the Kernels would win until a forfeit at 285 pounds.

Brandon Valley would take the first two matches, but Mitchell rebounded to win four consecutive matches to gain a 20-11 lead.

Brock Sparks pinned Jesse Johnson in 3 minutes, 7 seconds at 120 pounds and Brandon Sparks pinned Caleb Klatt in 4 minutes, 53 seconds at 126 pounds. Bryce Palmer followed with a 10-2 major decision over Ryan Presler at 132 and Bauder had a 13-3 major decision over Teygan Harstad at 138.

The Lynx would take control after that, though, rolling to seven consecutive wins, including two forfeits and five pins until Beau Foote pinned Sam Lembcke in 2:52 to end the night at 285 pounds.

Mitchell returns to action at Pierre at 5 p.m. on Friday.
