The road to the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center starts Saturday.
Four Class B region wrestling tournaments will take place on Saturday, with most of the area grapplers traveling to Parkston for the Region 3B tournament. The top-four finishers in each region will advance to the state tournament, which is Feb. 22-23 in Rapid City. The 16-wrestler state tournament brackets will likely be announced over the weekend. A region winner is guaranteed to be seeded in the top eight.
Winner Area headlines Region 3B lineup
Class B No. 2 Winner Area has nine wrestlers ranked in the Dakota Grappler rankings and projects to come away with the Region 3B tournament title for the third year in a row. The tournament is at 10 a.m. Saturday in Parkston.
Winner's Kaden Keiser (39-1) is the top-ranked wrestler in the 120-pound division. It also has Wyatt Turnquist (39-2) as the No. 2-ranked wrestler at 138 pounds, while Sam Kruger (35-3) has the same ranking at 160. Trevor Peters (37-5 at 152) is the third-ranked wrestler and Jack Kruger (27-15) is fifth in the 132-pound class.
No. 4 Wagner has six ranked wrestlers, but is led by the top-ranked wrestler in the 220-pound class, KJ St. Pierre (30-4). The Red Raiders also have 126-pound No. 2 Bradyn Lhotak (28-14), 120-pound No. 3 Lance Soukup (34-8)-who is the defending state champion at 113 pounds-and fifth-ranked Dawson Lensing (30-8) at 285 pounds.
The host No. 5 Parkston boasts a pair of top-ranked wrestlers-Riley Weber (25-2) and Lucas Bietz (33-1) at 106 and 160 pounds, respectively. The Trojans also have fifth-ranked wrestlers Landon Sudbeck (20-12) at 113 pounds and Slayton Neugebauer (28-10) at 195 pounds.
No. 6 Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes has a trio of wrestlers ranked in the top five. Wyatt Talbott (37-7) and Tyler Resick (32-4) are both ranked No. 3, while Ty Namanny (27-7) is the fourth-ranked 152-pound wrestler. Burke/Gregory has Owen Hansen (34-3) and Jeremiah Beck (27-2) ranked No. 4. Frank Even (29-4) comes in at No. 5 in the 152-pound division.
Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney has four ranked wrestlers, though is paced by No. 2 Jesse Hastings (27-2) at 220 pounds, who has won the regional championship the last two years.
Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon's Josh Crownover (182)-a defending state champion at 160-and Keegan Haider (30-6 at 113) and Tate Haider (32-5 at 138), of Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington, all are the third-ranked wrestlers in their respective class. WSWWW has six ranked wrestlers.
Marion/Freeman hosts Region 2B
A trio of area teams-McCook Central/Montrose, Marion/Freeman and Howard-will compete in the Region 2B tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday in Freeman. Canton is the favorite as the top-ranked team in the state, though Howard (No. 6) and McCook Central/Montrose (No. 14) will also be in the running.
The Tigers' highest-rated wrestler is No. 2 Lane Miller, who is 36-7 at 113 pounds. However, Riley Genzlinger (No. 4, 36-9) and EJ Leetch (No. 3, 37-4) are both ranked in the top five at 126 and 195, respectively.
For MCM, which has six wrestlers ranked, Blake Gessner (44-4) and Jacob Cheeseman (37-9) are both the No. 4-ranked wrestlers at 160 and 170, respectively.
Lyman brings three ranked wrestlers into regions
Lyman will wrestle at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fort Pierre during the Region 4B tournament. While it has a few ranked wrestlers, Philip Area and Custer/Edgemont are considered the favorites.
The Raiders' lightweights are led by Bryson Muirhead (38-10) being ranked No. 7 at 106 pounds and Shilo Mowry (27-11 at 120) coming in at No. 12. The 285-pound Jadeon Biggers is ranked ninth with a 26-12 record.
