The Mitchell High School wrestling team has been battered by injuries this season and it was looking to bounce back from its first Eastern South Dakota Conference dual meet loss to Pierre last Friday in a triangular against conference foes Yankton and Harrisburg on Thursday.

The Kernels scored 49 consecutive points-24 by forfeit-in a 55-14 win against Yankton, but head coach Travis Carpenter felt they needed to clean up some mistakes later in the night against Harrisburg.

Mitchell responded to the challenge, bolting out of the gates to 36-4 after eight matches and registered seven pins-three in the first period-in a 51-18 rout of the Tigers.

"We won a lot of matches in that first dual against Yankton and I thought we wrestled really well, but I thought we were sloppy in some places even when we won," Carpenter said. "They cleaned the up in the next dual. If the kids come out and wrestle like that, we're capable of doing some great things."

Mitchell lost its first two matches to Yankton, but Bryce Palmer turned the tide with a pin at 120 pounds and the Kernels only lost two matches the rest of the way.

Palmer was also part of a big run to start the dual against Harrisburg that saw Mitchell score the first 21 points, capped by Trent Beintma's pin of Jadyn Schilling in 1:23.

In total, Mitchell recorded 11 pins in the two duals, with Palmer, Cole Gehrke and Tucker Vilhauer each earning two pins and Brock Sparks, Carter Max and Beau Foote also notching pins against Harrisburg.

"Our mentality is go out and score 12 points," Carpenter said. "When you do that, you're going to put yourself in a position to be offensive and take advantage of mistakes. Aggression was definitely what it was about. We wanted to go out and be as offensive as we could be."

While the Kernels racked up the pins, senior Max Schoenfelder picked up a pair of hard-fought wins at 182 pounds, earning a bit of revenge in the final home meet of his high school career.

Schoenfelder sought his first win over Yankton's Owen Warren in six attempts and it was grind from start to finish. The pair finished regulation tied 1-1 and a sudden victory overtime period did not resolve the conflict.

Warren gained a 2-1 advantage after the first of two tiebreaker periods, but Schoenfelder was able to tie it in the final minute and then earned an escape to win the match with two seconds left on the clock.

"We've gotten beat in overtime the last couple times with (Warren) and we went to overtime with him and this time we came out ahead," Carpenter said. "I'm really happy for Max. The seniors we had on the mat all got wins tonight and what a great way for them to finish up their time in our gym."

Schoenfelder also registered a 9-2 decision over Harrisburg's Trey Stauffacher to finish off his night.

Mitchell (5-6, 4-1 ESD) is scheduled to compete in the River City Rumble on Saturday at the Chamberlain Armory.
