WINNER -- Dan Aaker knew it, and so did his athletes.

The Winner High School track and field team's closest competitor at Thursday's Region 7A track and field meet was going to be Platte-Geddes. And that went for the girls' and the boys' competition.

The Warriors did enough to win a pair of team region championships on their home track. Winner's girls finished with a team score of 203 -- well ahead of Platte-Geddes' second-place score of 153 -- and the Warriors boys scored 212 team points. Platte-Geddes was second with 179 points in the boys' race.

"We had met up with Platte-(Geddes) a couple times at other meets and they were probably our closest competition," Winner senior Kelli Norrid said following the meet. "But we knew we had a good chance of winning regions ... the boys kind of had a dogfight going, too."

Norrid helped lead the way for the Winner girls. She ran her top time of the season in the 100-meter hurdles -- 15.3 seconds -- and also won the 300 hurdles for her two individual region titles. Norrid also ran the opening leg of the Warriors 800- and 1,600-meter relay wins Thursday.

Norrid said she expects to run both hurdles races and the 800 and 1,600 relays at next week's state event, even though she also qualified for state individually in the long jump.

"I'm doing the two relays instead," she said.

The meet was run on a rolling schedule to avoid bad weather in the Winner area in the late afternoon. The event got done without much interruption from rain and meet officials decided to take a 10-minute intermission between preliminaries and finals instead of the originally scheduled 90-minute hiatus.

"We hardly took any break," said Aaker, who coaches the Winner track and field teams. "For the forecast, we had a great day and no question we did the right thing by running the events as faced as we could.

"The wind probably impacted the times in the longer races a little bit, but with the way the weather has been this year, we can't complain."

Loni Vosika, a senior for Winner, won the 400-meter dash and anchored the 800- and 1,600-meter relays to victories. Dana Diez and Raysha Gardner teamed with Vosika and Norrid in the 800 relay, while Diez and Katie Mathis teamed with the two in the 1,600 relay.

Norrid said she has high hopes for her hurdle competitions at the state meet.

"I am going for a state championship in the 100s and the 300s, for sure," said Norrid, who said she does not have a time she wants to get to, but "it's just about beating everybody else.

"I'm going in with a 15.3 so I'm pretty excited."

Entering Thursday's region meets, St. Thomas More's Katy Freidel had the top time in Class A for the 100 hurdles at 15.2 seconds.

On the boys' side, Zach Horstman and Skyler Kuil helped the Warriors to the title.

Horstman won the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.4 seconds.

He also helped Winner win the 800- and 1,600-meter relays. Aaker said Horstman will run the open 200, along with the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays at the state meet next week in Sioux Falls.

Kuil won the 400 in a time of 51.8 seconds.

"I hope to break 50 (seconds) in the 400," Kuil said of his expectations for the state meet.

Kuil also qualified for state in the 200 with a third-place finish in a time of 22.6 seconds. Kuil also was part of the 800 and 1,600 relays.

"We went out about as good as we could have," Aaker said of his team's region performance.
