DE SMET -- The Wessington Springs boys golf team took third in the De Smet Invitational Tuesday.
The Spartans shot a 261, 16 strokes behind first-place James Valley Christian. De Smet was second with a 248, while Wester Area was fourth with a 285 and Deuel was fifth with a 291 at Kingsbury Golf Course.
Jacob Messmer finished ninth in the individual standings with an 85, while teammate Blake Larson was 10th with an 86. Deuel’s Tanner Preheim was the champion, shooting a 76, two strokes ahead of James Valley Christian runner-up Jevin Goertz.
Kirstie Munsen placed fifth in the girls individual standings for Wessington Springs, shooting a 98. Miller’s Jayce Pugh took the top spot with a 97, three strokes better than Sioux Valley’s Julia Steffensen.
Miller edged Sioux Valley for the girls team title by one stroke, posting a 292. Wessington Springs did not enter in the team competition.
