SCOTLAND -- Even though Wagner High School senior Jack Robinson hasn't competed in a throwing event since his freshman year, he's already qualified for the state meet in the shot put and the discus events.
At the Little Missouri Valley Conference meet on Tuesday, Robinson took first place in the shot put event with a throw of 51 feet, 4.5 inches and took second place in the discus event with a throw of 140-feet-5. With his first- and second-place finish, Robinson helped the Wagner boys' track team to a third-place finish at the meet on Tuesday.
"He's got the raw strength and the power that's necessary for throwing events," Wagner track coach John Tyler said. "Our throwing coach, Joe Kafka, has just been working on some of the finer things like some of the footwork, the follow through, how it leaves the fingers and just stuff like that. He's trying to fine-tune a few things."
Robinson was unsure about whether he wanted to come out for track this season, but when he asked Tyler if he could compete in the throwing events, there was no doubt in Tyler's mind Robinson would do well. Robinson also plays football and basketball for Wagner, and Tyler felt he'd be a good addition to have for the track team.
Tyler said he's been very impressed with Robinson's performance so far this year.

"Some kids can go out there and just power through, but Jack is trying to tweak little things on his form and on his spin," Tyler said.
