WOLSEY — Tournament host Wolsey-Wessington defeated Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in a best-of-three championship match on Saturday. Set scores were 25-16 and 25-18.
Wolsey-Wessington (8-0): Mya Boomsma led the Warbirds with a 14-kill, 16-dig double-double. Macie Luce added a pair of aces and 14 assists. Wolsey-Wessington hosts Aberdeen Christian on Sept. 16.
Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (9-2): Trista White had 10 digs and three kills and Brooke Doering had four kills and one block for the Blackhawks. SCW is at Wessington Springs on Sept. 14.
Mitchell Christian finished the tournament going 1-2, defeating Marty and dropping matches to Sioux Falls Lutheran and Wolsey-Wessington (25-8 and 25-7). Against Sioux Falls Lutheran (25-19 and 25-14), Kelsey Holdeman had five kills, while Whisper Eben had two kills and three aces. O’Neill had seven kills and 13 digs against the Braves, with six kills, six digs and five aces from Kelsey Holdeman. Whisper Eben had 15 digs for MCS, which won 22-25, 27-25 and 25-22.
Mitchell Christian (1-6) will host Marty on Sept. 14.
Chester Area hands Garretson first loss in tournament final
MONTROSE — Chester Area edged previously unbeaten Garretson in five sets to claim the Big East Tournament title Saturday afternoon. Set scores were 23-25, 25-23, 19-25, 27-25 and 15-12.
Chester Area (9-2): Jayda Kenyon led the Flyers with 14 kills. Lily VanHal 24 assists and a pair of ace serves, while Emery Larson had 29 digs. Chester Area hosts Elkton-Lake Benton on Sept. 14.
Garretson (9-1): Two Blue Dragons notched double-doubles, as Lily Ranschau finished with 19 kills and 18 digs and Jaelyn Benson recorded 44 assists, 18 digs, seven kills and two aces. Garretson hosts Flandreau on Sept. 14.
Third place: Baltic def. McCook Central/Montrose, 25-21, 25-22, 34-36, 19-25 and 15-10.
For Baltic, Elyssa Clark has 12 kills and 18 digs. Sami Polzin added 11 kills, 20 digs and five aces. Jacie Wendland chipped in 23 assists and 18 digs for the Bulldogs, who host West Central on Sept. 14.
Brandy Pulse led MCM with 18 kills and 14 digs. Aubree Kranz offered five aces and 10 digs, and Brianna Even had 42 assists. The Fighting Cougars are at Sioux Falls Christian on Sept. 14.
Fifth place: Parker def. Beresford, 19-25, 24-26, 28-26, 25-21 and 15-13.
Brooke Berens paced Parker with 31 kills and 70 digs. Lexi Even’s 43 assists also led the Pheasants, who are at Tea Area on Sept. 14.
Larissa Tiedeman’s 28-assist, 12-dig double-double led the way for the Watchdogs, who also got 20 digs and six aces from Autumn Namminga. Beresford travels to face McCook Central/Montrose on Sept. 16.
Seventh place: Sioux Valley def. Flandreau, 25-20, 24-26, 20-25, 25-20 and 15-12.
Sioux Valley’s Reagan Johnson recorded 22 kills, three blocks and a pair of aces, as Ashley Bjerke notched a 23-assist, 14-dig double-double. The Cossacks host De Smet on Sept. 14.
No stats were available for Flandreau. The Fliers are at Garretson on Sept. 14.
Warner cruises to first place at Arlington Tournament
ARLINGTON — Warner dropped just one set across five best-of-three set matches to claim the Arlington Tournament title in the six-team round robin competition.
Arlington took second place and was the only team to take a set off of Warner, as the Monarchs defeated the hosts by set scores of 25-19, 22-25 and 25-23.
In that match, Warner’s Ava Nilsson had 29 assists, 15 digs and two aces. Kyra Marcuson also notched a double-double for the Monarchs with 11 kills and 14 digs to go with two aces
For Arlington, Hadley Carlson recorded 26 kills, 19 digs and two aces. Grace Parry had 32 assists for the Cardinals.
Burke placed third at the tournament, with a 3-2 record. The Cougars defeated Elkton/Lake Benton, Deubrook Area and Faulkton, but fell to Warner and Arlington.
Adisyn Indahl posted the Cougars’ best individual match performance with 17 kills, 27 digs and three aces in the win over Faulkton. Indahl added 13 kills and 21 digs against Faulkton.
Placings were as follows:
First: Warner (5-0 tournament, 10-1 overall)
Second: Arlington (4-1, 6-3)
Third: Burke (3-2, 6-4)
Fourth: Elkton/Lake Benton (2-3, 4-4)
Fifth: Faulkton (1-4, 6-4)
Sixth: Deubrook Area (0-5, 4-5)
