PIERRE -- The Mitchell High School volleyball team dropped 3-1 decision against Pierre in the non-conference match between the two Eastern South Dakota Conference foes. Set scores were 25-14, 25-16, 31-33 and 25-20.

Mitchell (1-4) coach Deb Thill said passing broke down in the first two sets, but the Kernels cleaned it up and it helped lead to a two-point marathon win in the third set.

“It was quite the battle and for us to win -- both teams obviously had opportunities to win -- and we won,” Thill said. “So that was really good and of course we really played well in set four until about point 20 and then we kind of had some unforced errors after that, but we put ourself in a situation to put the match in set five. I was very happy how we turned it around because we did not pass the ball very well in the first two sets.”

Regan Waddell led the Kernels with 10 kills, while Amy Uher finished with seven kills. Mary Baltzer and Megan Scheurenbrand each had four blocks apiece. Uher and Sarah Sebert had 23 and 21 digs, respectively.

“They all had their moments,” Thill said. “We are going to keep getting better. Pierre is really good. They have nine seniors all returning that played last year and they are going to beat some teams.”

The Kernels will play Brandon Valley on Sept. 10. Mitchell just lost to Brandon Valley at the Huron Invitational.
