OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- After two weeks without a match, the Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team breezed through the Wendy’s Labor Day Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
The Tigers won all four of their matches in Oskaloosa, Iowa, although the first of the tournament on Friday was the most challenging.
Hometown William Penn took the first set, 25-17, and then DWU bounced back to take the second, 25-16. The teams split the next two in sets decided by two points apiece, for the Tigers took the fifth to win, 17-25, 25-16, 27-25, 23-25 and 15-11.
Becky Frick had 17 kills and 16 digs in the match, while Mallory Cooper had 26 digs.
In the second match, DWU pulled out a two-point win over Graceland (Iowa), but then pulled away with convincing victories for the sweep, 26-24, 25-15 and 25-11.
Bridgett Knobbe had 25 assists, while Frick had eight kills and five digs and Wagner native Emily Brunsing had seven kills.
On Sunday, DWU added another dominant sweep, this time against Governors State (Illinois), 25-11, 25-14 and 25-9.
Frick had 17 kills, while Knobbe added 31 assists and 10 digs and Brittany Bergquist had seven kills, four digs and two blocks.
In the final game of the weekend, DWU battled St. Mary University (Kansas) in a four-set match, with the Tigers edging the Spires, 25-11, 22-25, 26-24 and 25-20.
Knobbe dished out 48 assists and nine digs, while Frick had 15 kills and Brunsing chipped in 12. Cooper had 20 digs and Bergquist had eight kills.
Frick finished the weekend with a total of 59 kills, while Knobbe tallied 147 assists and Cooper came up with 62 digs.
DWU opens play in the Great Plains Athletic Conference against No. 7 Northwestern at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Corn Palace.
