DWU wins two to open Corn Palace Classic
The hot start for the Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team didn't slow down Friday at the Tigers' home tournament: the Corn Palace Classic.
DWU won the opening game against Sterling (Kan.) in straight sets 25-10, 25-13 and 25-23. Becky Frick had 17 kills and 10 digs, while Kimberly VanBockern had eight kills. Sara Herman had 23 digs, while Mallory Cooper added 13 digs in the victory. DWU hit .378 in the opening set without an error to set the pace in the match.
In the late match, DWU rallied for a comeback in the fourth set to take down Mayville State, 27-25, 23-25, 25-9 and 25-22. The Tigers trailed 12-4 in the fourth set but marched back to improve to 7-0 on the season.
Frick was huge once more with 24 kills and 28 digs. Sydney Fritz had 12 kills, while Madison Smith added eight. Bridgett Knobbe had 48 set assists and six Tigers were in double-digit digs, led by Mallory Cooper's 29.
DWU plays twice more Saturday, facing Montana Western at noon, and Dickinson State at 6 p.m. at the Corn Palace.
