Van Overschelde's three pins sends Mitchell to second place at Brandon Valley duals

Mitchell High School rattled off three dominant wins before falling short of a championship at the Brandon Valley duals Saturday. The Kernels cruised past Rapid City Central (60-12), Lennox (63-11) and Dakota Valley (78-3), but did not have enough left to take down host Brandon Valley. The Lynx recorded bonus points in eight matches to beat Mitchell 52-13.

BRANDON -- Mitchell High School rattled off three dominant wins before falling short of a championship at the Brandon Valley duals Saturday.

The Kernels cruised past Rapid City Central (60-12), Lennox (63-11) and Dakota Valley (78-3), but did not have enough left to take down host Brandon Valley. The Lynx recorded bonus points in eight matches to beat Mitchell 52-13.

Joe Van Overschelde was the lone Kernel to go unbeaten on the day. Van Overschelde started the day by pinning Rapid City Central’s David Miller in 3 minutes, 57 seconds at 182 pounds and capped it with a 10-2 major decision against Brandon Valley’s Dominic Tucker. He secured a 19-second pin against Dakota Valley’s Isaiah Hoffman and earned a forfeit win against Lennox.

Spencer Eldeen (106), Brandon Sparks (120), Jagger Tyler (120), Brock Sparks (132), Riley McGinnis (138), Blake Fredericks (195), Wyatt Winter (220) and Beau Foote (285) each recorded pins against Central, including a 45-second fall by Foote.

Foote added a 34-second fall against Lennox’s Hayden Herlyn, while Eldeen, Kaileb Hubbard (113) and Brock Sparks added falls. Mitchell (18-2) won six matches in the dual by forfeit.

Brock Sparks notched his third fall of the day with a 27-second pin of Dakota Valley’s Eston Monical, while Hubbard notched a 51-second pin and Tucker Vilhauer earned a pin against Lake Kistner in 1 minute, 16 seconds at 145. The Kernels won nine matches by forfeit.

Mitchell competes in the Yankton tournament at 9 a.m. on Feb. 6.
