Willet, Brunke lead DWU at GPAC XC championships

SEWARD, Neb. - Dakota Wesleyan University’s Kellan Willet and Haley Brunke led the Tiger cross country teams at the Great Plains Athletic Conference championships Saturday.

Willet, a freshman, took 26th in the men’s 8K race with a time of 27 minutes, 38.91 seconds. Trace Tjeerdsma was 65th in 29:19.81, Jeff Sahli was 68th in 29:23.32, Jared Stearns was 83rd in 31.13.23 and Brent Matter was 95th in 38.53.96.

The DWU men finished in ninth with 276 points and Morningside won with 41.

On the girls’ side, DWU took 10th with 280 points and Dordt claimed the team title with 35. Brunke, a Scotland native, was 35th with a time of 20:21.93 in the 5K run.
Skylar Forgey was 66th in 21:33.57, Jamie Geho was 71st in 21:59.71, Jessica Neises was 74th in 22:07.58, Nicole Court-Menendez took 78th in 22:19.13 and Heather Banister was 94th in 28:37.67.

This was the final meet for the Tigers.

DWU football cracks top 25

The Dakota Wesleyan University football team found its way into the NAIA top 25 coaches’ poll after its 24-13 over Concordia Saturday.

The Tigers (7-3, 6-2 GPAC) are ranked 22nd and will play their regular-season finale against Dordt College at 1 p.m. Saturday in Sioux Center, Iowa.

The ranking is the first for DWU since Oct. 22, 2012 and the Tigers are still playing for a potential at-large bid into the NAIA playoffs.
