ABERDEEN — The 2021 Mitchell High School track and field season got underway on Tuesday, March 23 at Northern State University’s Barnett Center with the Class AA Invitational involving four Eastern South Dakota Conference teams getting indoor performances under their belt.
The Kernels’ Parker Phillips took first place in the men’s 55-meter dash, with a winning time of 6.71 seconds. Joseph Haddon was a winner in the boys triple jump with a leap of 38 feet, 11.5 inches. Haddon was one of three Kernels in the top-5 of the event, with Treyson Schulz finishing fourth (35-10.75) and Corbin Cheeseman finishing fifth (31-6.50).
Ryley Johansen was second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 24.68 seconds, and second in the high jump with a posting of 5 feet, 10 inches. Carter Moller was third in the high jump at 5-foot-8. Schulz was fifth in the boys long jump at 19 feet, 2.75 inches.
The boys 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams each finished third, consisting of Moller, Jagger Tyler, Andrew Gunnare and Nathan McCormick. The 4x400 time was 3:52.97 and the 4x800 time was 9:18.84.
In girls competition, Mia Mullenmeister was second in the 55-meter dash at 7.71 seconds, edged by Watertown’s Myah Morris.
Mitchell’s 4x400-relay team of Mullenmeister, Claire Hegg, Adelyn Prunty and Madeline Vogel won the six-team race, edging out the Pierre B relay team by two-hundredths of a second in a time of 4:31.71.
The Kernels’ Maddi Lord was second in the triple jump with a best leap of 30 feet, 5.5 inches, with Peyton Peterson fifth at 29 feet, 7.25 inches.
In addition to Mitchell, athletes from Aberdeen Central, Pierre and Watertown also competed. No team points were kept and indoor performances do not count for qualification to the South Dakota State Track and Field meet.
Many of the same teams, including Mitchell, will return to NSU campus on March 30 for the ESD Indoor Meet.
