PIERRE-The Mitchell High School track and field team took advantage of some better weather on Thursday.
Snowy and cold conditions put a damper on the season early on, but the Kernels were able to compete at the Pierre Legion Relays. Mitchell's last competition was on April 9 at the Mitchell Triangular.
"The kids have just put in a great week of practice," Mitchell coach Joe Shepardson said. "I couldn't be more pleased with how hard they have been working practice and we saw some results from that hard work."
Mitchell High School high jumper Carly Haring claimed first in the high jump, while Sutton Carpenter and Sam Jones both vaulted their way to top-five finishes in the pole vault.
Haring won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches. She also took 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 32-10.
Carpenter cleared 12 feet, 9 inches and took fourth place in the pole vault, while Jones went 12-3 and finished in fifth place. Carpenter's mark of 12-9 is currently the fourth best mark in Class AA this season. Brandon Valley's Ethan Tellinghuisen currently has the best mark in Class AA at 14-1. He finished second in Pierre on Saturday with a mark of 13-9.
The MHS girls 4x100-meter relay team of McKenzie Norton, Aliyah Howard, Cassir Hohrman and Caitlin Ostbye took sixth with a time of 52.86 seconds.
"I was really happy with our girls 4-1 relay," Shepardson said. "They ran a couple seconds faster and moved themselves up in the standings in the state."
The Kernels will compete in the Yankton Invitational on April 25 as they look to build on the Thursday's meet.
"Now that the snow is gone, we can get a little bit more detailed stuff on the track during practices," Shepardson said. "It comes back to all that hard work. These kids have bought in. They know what it takes and we will keep building off of that. If they keep working as hard as they have been, we will continue to see results."
Winner's Fritz, Brozik win titles
Winner's Brady Fritz and Ellie Brozik claimed field event titles at the Pierre Legion Relays.
Fritz won the long jump with a mark of 20-11.25, while also finishing second in the 100-meter dash in 11.08 seconds.
Brozik won the triple jump with a leap of 35-7.25.
Joren Bruun captured fourth in the triple jump (41-7.75), while Bella Swedlund took fourth in the discus (104-6).
The Warriors will compete in the Cecil Johnson Invitational on April 25 in Presho.
