Former area coaches to be inducted into SDCCTFCA Hall of Fame
Three former area coaches will be inducted into the South Dakota Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Saturday at the South Dakota National Guard Armory in Sioux Falls. The induction ceremony starts at 11:30 a.m.
Gene Danielson (Salem), Laverne Diede (Freeman) and Don Lhotak (Bonesteel-Fairfax) are among the seven inductees into the hall of fame.
Danielson coached his teams to four state runner-up finishes and 13 region titles. He was inducted into the South Dakota High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2005. He was also named the SDHSCA boys cross-country coach of the year in 1993.
Diede was named the SDHSCA girls track and field coach of the year in 1976. He led the Freeman girls to the 1977 state championship.
Lhotak was named the SDHSCA girls cross-country coach of the year in 1994 and received the association's 25-year coaching award.
Arlington's Lowell Gilbertson, Chester's Tom Main, Dakota State and Huron's Buzz Stevenson and Hecla's Terry Ulmer will also be inducted.
