Schmidt gets 3 hits in Game 2 of Black sweep

Jed Schmidt pitched three hitless innings and went 3-for-3 at the plate as Mitchell Black earned a 9-3 teener victory over Sioux Falls Central Thursday at Drake Field. The Game 2 win gave Mitchell a doubleheader sweep, its first of the season, and evened the team's record at 10-10.

Black won the opener 12-0 in a game shortened by the 10-run rule.

In the second game, Schmidt was the starting pitcher and faced just nine batters in three innings. He allowed no hits and no walks while striking out four. Offensively, he had three singles and a sacrifice fly, along with three RBIs.

Also for Mitchell, Devin Mehlhaff had a single and a double, Reed Overweg had two singles and Parker Wenzel doubled. Wenzel was the winning pitcher, working the final four innings. He allowed four hits and a walk while striking out four.

In Game 1, Josh Feiner pitched all five innings, allowing three hits and striking out six. He didn't walk a batter.

Black got two hits each from Koln Thie and Wenzel. Mitchell was limited to six hits, but Sioux Falls Central committed six errors.

Schmidt and Overweg reached base seven and six times, respectively, on the day.

Bormann finishes 2nd at qualifier

SIOUX FALLS -- Sydney Bormann, of Parkston, shot a round of 81 for a second-place finish at the 2012 United State Golf Association Junior Girls' Qualifier Tuesday in Sioux Falls.

Hallie Getz, of Pierre, won the event with a score of 77. Getz qualified for the national USGA Junior Girls' Championship July 16-21 in Daly City, Calif. The second-place finish made Bormann the first alternate for the national championship.

Duling named athlete of the year

University of South Dakota track and field athlete Alexa Duling, of Gregory, has been named the 2012 Summit League Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, the league announced on Wednesday.

Duling, a junior, earned second-team All-American honors with a 12th-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at her first NCAA championships. She was also recently named to the academic all-Summit League team.

DWU men's golf signs third recruit

Dakota Wesleyan University head golf coach Adam Anderson announced the signing of Jay Determan, of Burke, this week.

Determan marks the third signee for the men's squad this year and joins the Tigers after earning four varsity letters for South Central's boys' golf team.

All three recruits this year for DWU have been South Dakota natives as Determan joins Hot Springs' Brady Besco and Winner's Anthony Husher.

Lakeview to host event today

The Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell will be hosting an event with a shotgun start which begins at 8 a.m. today.

Boys' and girls' grades 7-12 are welcome along with younger players as well.
