DWU men take 7th in qualifier, fourth overall

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- The Dakota Wesleyan University men's golf team finished seventh in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Qualifier No. 4 tournament Thursday.

The Tigers, who shot a 311, took fourth in the overall GPAC standings. After four qualifier tournaments, DWU finished one stroke ahead of Midland University and Northwestern College claimed the conference title, topping the rest of the field by 15 strokes.

In the fourth qualifier, DWU's Tommy Anderson tied for 10th with a 75.

Travis Johnson was DWU's highest finisher in the conference standings as he tied for 14th. Austin Hieb tied for 16th and Tyler Burr finished 25th overall for DWU.

Sudbeck wins shot put for Kernels

YANKTON -- Mitchell's Abby Sudbeck claimed the girls' shot put title at the First Dakota Relays Thursday in Yankton.

Sudbeck recorded a throw of 38-feet-10 1/2 inches. Emma Schmidt was second in the girls' 400-meter dash with a time of 1 minute, 7 seconds. Look left for complete results.

Jesse Volek and Taylor Volesky took fourth and fifth in the girls' triple jump and the Kernels' 3,200 and medley relay teams both took second.

On the boys' side, Ben Prill was fifth in the triple jump and Mitchell's medley relay team took third and the 4x100 relay team was sixth.

Roosevelt sweeps Mitchell JV team

The Mitchell High School junior varsity baseball team dropped two games to Sioux Falls Roosevelt Thursday in Mitchell. The Kernels lost the opening game of the twin bill in six innings 16-1 while recording two hits.

Mitchell fell in game two 13-2, in five innings. The Kernels were held hitless, but scored their runs from a wild pitch and a fielder's choice.

Mitchell plays Rapid City Central Saturday in Rapid City.

Wesleyan splits with Dordt

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Dakota Wesleyan University shortstop Michael Lukkason finished 6-for-8 at the plate with 7 RBIs to help the Tigers split its Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader with Dordt College Thursday in Sioux City, Iowa.

DWU took game one 9-5 with help from Lukkason, who hit a two-run home run in the first inning and finished the game with 6 RBIs.

Despite the hot bat of Lukkason, who picked up where he left off in game two, again going 3-for-4 with one RBI, the Tigers fell to Dordt 8-6. In game two DWU (21-22) also got a two-run homer from catcher Toby Kaplan.
