DWU softball team adds two names to roster

The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team recently announced the signing of freshman Brooklyn Bair and junior college transfer Jill Dickson.

They are joining the team this fall. Dickson is a junior pitcher from Seward County Community College. Bair comes to Wesleyan as a utility player from Bennett County High School in Martin.

DWU's recruiting class is now at 10 for the 2013 season.

Tiger men get transfer Aireus Stephenson

Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball coach Shane Murphy announced the signing of Aireus Stephenson recently.

Stephenson, a 6-foot guard who will be a senior, is originally from Atlanta. He played for South Dakota State University as well as Colby Community College.

He played in 18 games off the bench for the Jacks in 2010-11 and averaged 2.5 points per game.

Melgoza joins DWU track, cross country teams

Jose Melgoza will join the Dakota Wesleyan University track and cross country programs this fall, it was recently announced.

Melgoza is a Dallas, Texas, native. He competes in the mile and half-marathon competitions in track.

DWU volleyball team to host skills camp in June

There will be two Tiger volleyball skills camp in June, Dakota Wesleyan University coach Eric Viney announced Tuesday.

The Tiger high school skills camp, for freshmen to seniors, runs from 8 a.m. to noon each day June 4-6.

The youth camp is for third- through eighth-graders and runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 4-5. The camps are designed to developed basic skills of the sport and provide a fun atmosphere with learning.

Lakeview to host golf tournaments

Lakeview Golf Course, Mitchell, is hosting the Chamber Golf Classic on June 1 and the 10th annual golf scramble on June 8.

The Chamber Golf Classic starts at 12:30 p.m. for three-person teams. Chamber members call 995-8460 to register.

Rock Bass beat Bullheads in amateur baseball

PARKSTON -- The Parkston Rock Bass defeated the Parkston Bullheads 16-5 in seven innings in a Sunshine League amateur baseball game Monday.

Jared Weber was the winning pitcher for the Rock Bass. Billy Hamilton, Dylan Mogck and Jordan and Kyle Boehmer each had three hits for the Rock Bass, who are now 1-1 in the Sunshine League.

Jim Sudbeck had two hits for the Bullheads and Tim Rands had a double with two RBIs and two walks.

The Bullheads are 0-2 in league play.

Mount Vernon tops Plankinton

MOUNT VERNON -- Mount Vernon defeated Plankinton 9-6 in amateur baseball action Tuesday night.

Eric Denning threw 2 2/3 innings in relief and picked up the win.

Mount Vernon starter Phil Malde threw six innings of no-hit baseball. He struck out seven and walked one.

Offensively for Mount Vernon, Brett Young had a home run and a double, Sean DeVries had a single and a double and Denning had two hits.

Plankinton's Kyle Bruinsma, Travis Gant and Jeremi Nedved each had a single. Josh Hartman took the loss on the mount for Plankinton.

Mount Vernon (4-1) plays the Parkston Rock Bass Friday in Parkston. Plankinton's record was unavailable.

Walters throws complete game to lift Twins to win

CHICAGO (AP) -- P.J. Walters tossed his first career complete game and Justin Morneau hit a three-run homer as the Minnesota Twins routed the Chicago White Sox 9-2 on Tuesday night.

Walters, who gave up a solo homer to Gordon Beckham with one out in the first inning, threw a five-hitter.

In just his third start of the season, Walters (2-1) struck out eight and walked two.

The Twins jumped all over Gavin Floyd (3-5), scoring four runs in the second inning and five in the fourth.
