Tigers hold off Mount Marty on the road: Larson scores career-high 29 points

The DWU men's basketball team won its ninth straight contest.

YANKTON -- Mason Larson’s career night guided the Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team on Saturday.

Larson erupted for 29 points on 10-for-23 shooting and 4-for-7 3-point shooting during the Tigers’ 78-66 win over Mount Marty. He also grabbed seven rebounds in DWU’s ninth straight win.

DWU led 46-30 at halftime, with Larson scoring 23 of its points at the break. It shot 38.7 percent from the field as a team and made 6-for-22 3-pointers, as its lead grew to as many as 19 points on Saturday.

Mount Marty cut the deficit to four points, 52-48, with 11:20 to play, but the Tigers’ defense continued to hold the Lancers’ offense in check. They shot just 37.1 percent and 4-for-28 from deep, as Jailen Billings scored 27 points. Elijah Pappas added 11 points and 15 rebounds, but needed 14 shots to get there.

Koln Oppold had a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double for DWU, which also featured seven assists. Jeffrey Schuch added 11 points and five rebounds, as well.

DWU (9-1, 6-0 GPAC) plays No. 7 Morningside at 8 p.m. Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa.
