SIOUX CITY, Iowa-The Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday in Sioux City, Iowa.

The Tigers dropped their Great Plains Athletic Conference opener to No. 7 Briar Cliff University 70-55.

DWU shot 35 percent from the floor and went 6-of-27 on 3-pointers for 22 percent shooting from behind the arc in the loss.

"They defended well and that was the first time we've seen a zone (defense) and we struggled with it," DWU head coach Jason Christensen said. "Offensively, we couldn't get anything going and we didn't shoot the ball well. To win basketball games on the road we have to shoot better than what we did."

Amber Bray led the Tigers with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Erica Herrold and Kristin Sabers each added 11 points. Rylie Osthus chipped in nine points and Gabby Frykbo dished out five assists in the loss.

The Chargers (6-0) were led by Morgan Hansen, who finished the game with 14 points and eight rebounds. Briar Cliff's Jessi Corrick added 13 points, while Kaylee Blake finished with 11 points and Lexi Henschke had nine points. The Chargers made 26 of 61 field goals for 42 percent shooting and outrebounded the Tigers 43-33.

"I thought they out hustled us, they got their hands on a lot more 50-50 balls and they got their hands on a lot more rebounds," Christensen said. "We were pretty flat. You can't go into someone else's house and shoot poorly and expect to win."

DWU (4-1) plays at Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.
