Florida Gulf Coast tops S. Dakota State women

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico - The South Dakota State University women’s basketball team went 1-2 at the Puerto Vallarta Hardwood Tournament of Hope this week after falling to Florida Gulf Coast 84-59 Friday.

The Eagles (4-3) shot 46.2 percent from behind the arc, making 12 three-point baskets. Stephanie Haas had a game-high 18 points in the win.
The Jackrabbits were led by Megan Waytashek with 13 points, Mitchell native Kerri Young with 12 and Gabby Boever with a season-best 10 points.

SDSU (4-4) 42.2 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from behind the arc and 73.7 percent from the line.

The Jackrabbits host New Jersey Institute of Technology at 7 p.m. Monday at Frost Arena in Brookings.

S. Dakota State men fall to UC-Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The South Dakota State University men’s basketball team fell to University of California-Santa Barbara 83-64 Friday.

The Gauchos were led by Alan Williams, who had a game-high 39 points and nine rebounds. Zalmico Harmon added 14 points, Michael Bryson had 12 and Taran Brown had 10 in the win.

SDSU’s Chad White and Cody Larson each tallied 15 points and Jordan Dykstra followed with 14 points and a team-best seven rebounds.

The Jackrabbits shot 43 percent from the field, while the Gauchos, who outrebounded SDSU 31-29, shot 55 percent.

SDSU had 15 turnovers to UCSB’s seven.

SDSU (3-5) play Stanford University at 7 p.m. Sunday in Palo Alto, Calif.
