The Mitchell Kernels girls tennis team took down Watertown and Madison on Tuesday.
Mitchell defeated Watertown 8-1 and beat Madison 9-0.
After rain cancelled Mitchell's dual with Watertown, Mitchell and Watertown rescheduled to play at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Mitchell already had its home regular-season finale scheduled for 4 p.m. against Madison at Hitchcock Park, but in order to make the schedule fit, Mitchell traveled to Madison for the 4 p.m. dual.
Against Watertown, Atlanta Stahle lost the first set to Ellie Zink at No. 1 singles but recovered swiftly winning the second set 6-0 and the third set 10-6. Olivia Huber and Amber Moller both had fought victories over Josie Heyn and Jaida Young. In No. 2 singles, Huber beat Heyn 6-4, 7-6(4) while Moller took down Young at No. 3 singles 7-5, 7-6(8).
Julia Platt handled Leyla Meester in two sets at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-1. At No. 5 singles Sydney Reynolds topped Grace Ortmeier 6-2, 6-4 and Megan Mastel won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 singles over Faith Berg.
In doubles play, Moller and Reynolds surrendered the lone loss to Young and Ortmeier at No. 2 doubles 7-5, 6-3. Stahle and Huber won No. 1 doubles 7-5, 6-1 over Zink and Heyn while Mitchell’s Delaney Degen and Mastel beat Watertown’s Sophia Nichols and Meester 6-1, 7-6(8).
At Madison, Huber, Platt, Reynolds and Carsyn Weich were 6-0, 6-0 winners in singles play, with Weich filling the No. 4 singles role. Megan Mastel was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over the Bulldogs' Anna Oetzmann, and Atlanta Stahle won by the same score at No. 1 singles over Evelyn Graham.
Mitchell did not drop a set in doubles play against Madison, highlighted by a 6-0, 6-0 win from Mastel and Delaney Degen over Bailey Gonyo and Christian Rowe at No. 3 doubles. Stahle and Huber won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Moller and Reynolds won at No. 2 doubles for the Kernels.
Mitchell improves to 14-4 on the season as a team and will be in varsity action next on Sept. 28 at the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament in Huron.
