RAPID CITY -- On the same day the Mitchell High School girls tennis team scored a big win over Rapid City Christian, it suffered its first loss of the season.
Rapid City Stevens dealt the Kernels a 5-4 loss in the Rapid City Invitational late on Friday.
Mitchell’s Kelsey Dahme picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Erica Wing at No. 1 singles, while Atlanta Stahle beat Abbey Dehler at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0. The Kernel duo also beat Wing and Julia Wiedmeier at No. 1 doubles, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.
Olivia Huber and Amber Moller also scored a win over Dehler and Emma Thurness at No. 2 doubles for the Kernels, 6-4, 6-4. After dropping the first set to Macy Lundstrom at No. 6 singles, Ashley Jones won the second in a tiebreak, 7-6(4) and then scored a 10-7 win in the match tiebreak.
Wiedmeier topped Huber in a tight match at No. 3 singles, 5-7, 6-2, 11-9, while Stevens’ Mary Allen beat Kiersten Bathke in No. 4 singles play, 6-3, 6-0 and Abby Sherrill topped Amber Moller at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-4.
Bathke and Jones fell to Lundstrom and Sherrill, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 3 doubles.
Mitchell (7-1) returns to action in the Rapid City Invitational today, beginning with a dual against St. Thomas More at 8 a.m.
