SIOUX FALLS -- The Mitchell High School boys tennis team played inside and outside on Friday at the state tournament.
However, coach Pat Moller didn’t think it impacted his team, as the Kernels still have four players competing on the final day today. Matches were played at McKennan Park, Sioux Falls Washington, Brandon Valley and the indoor Huether Family Match Pointe throughout the day.
“I didn’t really see an impact one way or the other,” Moller said about switching courts. “Our kids seemed to adjust well to that. I didn’t think, ‘Oh shoot, it cost us a match.’ ”
In the team standings, Mitchell sits seventh with 250 points, while Sioux Falls O’Gorman (544) leads Sioux Falls Lincoln (542) by two points. Moller thinks his team has a big enough lead on Sioux Falls Roosevelt (227.5) to hold onto the seventh spot.
Macon Larson will play a pair of fifth-place matches today. He defeated Huron’s Eh Kalu 10-1 to advance to the fifth-place match against Sioux Falls Washington’s Noah Morgans in Flight 4 singles.
And he paired with Ben Helleloid in Flight 3 doubles to keep their season alive. They bounced back from a loss to O’Gorman (5-7, 6-4, 10-8) in a match, “that could have gone either way,” according to Moller, and defeated Rapid City Stevens 10-2 in the fifth-place semifinals.
“The sky’s the limit for Macon. He has so much potential,” Moller said. “... For a young team like (Larson/Helleloid) to be able to handle a disappointing loss and absolutely roll against a team that had the skill to compete with us -- that wasn’t a match they weren’t supposed to win that easily.”
The Kernels also had a pair of singles players win two matches to keep their seasons alive and advance to the consolation finals.
Ryan Bergeson won both of his matches, including a 10-1 win over Pierre’s Matthew Hanson in Flight 2. Tyler Loecker did the same, with a 10-1 win over Harrisburg’s Jaxon Hunter in Flight 6.
“We’re just hoping they set themselves up to get on the podium,” Moller said.
Kade Clark (Flight 1) went 1-1, while Max Tupper (Flight 3) and Helleloid (Flight 5) both lost their first match of the day and were eliminated. Clark/Bergeson (Flight 1) went 2-1 and Tupper/Kaden Jerke (Flight 2) lost both of their matches and were knocked out of doubles play.
Loecker and Bergeson will play for ninth place at 8 a.m., followed by Larson then Flight 3 doubles.
“Some kids got eliminated, but we still got four kids playing,” Moller said. “When you get to Saturday, a lot of teams don’t have anybody, so we’re pretty fortunate.”
