SIOUX FALLS-There was plenty of tennis played during the opening round of the state tournament on Thursday.

Due to rain in the forecast for today, another round of singles matches were played on Thursday. As a result, some players played six matches on the first day.

Despite the overload of tennis, every Mitchell High School tennis player is still alive as day two continues today.

"They played a lot of tennis," Mitchell coach Pat Moller said. "These kids fought hard and everybody is still alive. Nobody got eliminated and I was real proud of the way we played."

The Kernels are in seventh place with 215 points. Sioux Falls Lincoln and Sioux Falls O'Gorman are tied for the lead with 390 points.

"I am just real pleased with the way we played," Moller added. "As slow we started at (the Eastern South Dakota Conference Tournament), we played a lot better this time around. We just looked like we used that experience like I hoped we would and we are still in the hunt."

In singles action, Max Tupper (Flight 3), Macon Larson (Flight 4) and Ben Helleloid (Flight 5) all fell in championship quarterfinal matches. Tupper knocked off Brandon Valley's Jacob Frantzen 2-6, 6-4 and 12-10 in his quarterfinal match.

"Max Tupper had a heck of a day," Moller said. "That's a kid (Frantzen) he lost to three times during the year. That was a big win for him and he played real well in doubles, as well."

Larson topped Rapid City Stevens' 7-5, 2-6 and 12-10 in his quarterfinal match.

Tupper, Larson and Helleloid will all now play in the fifth-place semifinals today.

In doubles play, Tupper/Kade Jerke (Flight 2) and Larson/Helleloid (Flight 3) are both playing in championship quarterfinals matches today. Tupper and Jerke will battle Sioux Falls Washington's Davis Shafer and Noah Morgans in the quarterfinals. Larson and Helleloid will face Sioux Falls O'Gorman's Kade Moffitt and Gabe Dally in their quarterfinal match.

"They are going to be good and you get to the quarterfinals and there is nothing easy," Moller said.

The tourney continues today, with a decision on playing indoor or outdoor coming before 6:30 a.m. in the morning.
