‘Great day’ for Kernel tennis
RAPID CITY -- The Mitchell High School boys tennis team didn’t have a good day on Friday. It had a great day.
The Kernels are in third place with 385 points after the second day of the South Dakota State High School Tournament on Friday in Rapid City. Mitchell was tied with Sioux Falls Lincoln after the first day, but fell off the pace on day two as the Patriots distanced themselves from the field.
However, Mitchell coach Pat Moller is still pleased with where the Kernels sit heading into the final day.
“We had a great day,” Moller said. “We won the matches that we could win. Even the matches that we lost, I think we surprised some people with how well we are playing right now. I couldn’t be happier with the way we are playing.”
All eight of the Kernels will compete today, with Baley Miller (Flight No. 4), Kade Clark (Flight No. 5) and Ryan Bergeson (Flight No. 6) advancing to the semifinals in singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Miller and Adam Loes will also play in the semifinals today.
“Baley hasn’t lost a match yet this weekend and has just had an unbelievable tournament,” Moller said. “Hopefully he can finish strong (today).”
Sioux Falls Lincoln sits in first place with 470 points, while Rapid City Stevens is in second with 439. After the Kernels, Sioux Falls Roosevelt (372.5) and Sioux Falls O’Gorman (372) are fourth and fifth, respectively.
“They both have a lot of players left to play,” Moller said. “We really can’t worry about that. All we have to do is focus on matches that we have and try to win those.”
In today’s singles semifinals, Miller plays Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Zach Ridl, Clark battles Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Landon DeBoer and Bergeson goes up against Rapid City Stevens’ Ty Studer. In the doubles semifinals, Miller and Loes plays Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Graham Leonard and Rahul Giri.
“It’s Saturday of state tennis,” Moller said. “There aren’t any easy matches left. Everybody that is still playing is good and we are fortunate enough to have all eight of our guys still playing tennis on Saturday. We are just going to enjoy the experience and take it one match at a time.”
