ABERDEEN -- Tripp-Delmont/Armour exacted revenge on Ethan and capped off the best finish in program history on Saturday.

The Nighthawks defeated the Rustlers 57-46 for third place at the Class B state girls basketball tournament at Wachs Arena.

“Obviously, the best season we’ve ever had,” TDA coach Kristi Allen said. “It is going to be tough to top this.”

The Nighthawks (22-4) were defeated by the Rustlers (22-4) in last game of the regular season, 45-41. TDA turned the tables and pulled away from Ethan with a strong third quarter.

“The biggest difference was we realized this was the last time that we were going to get to play with those three seniors (that start),” Allen said. “There was a lot of emotion in this game and they just wanted to win and go out with a bang and that’s exactly what they did.”

TDA’s Mattilynn Reiner netted 16 points and Erica Koster added 14 points. Brooklyn Brouwer tossed in 11 points for TDA, which seize momentum in the third quarter and broke away from a 24-19 halftime lead.

“We were just finding each other,” Brouwer said about the third quarter. “Not being selfish, hitting the open people.”

The third quarter got away from the Rustlers for the second straight day. After getting outscored 21-12 against Hanson on Friday, TDA outscored the Rustlers 16-5 in the third quarter.

“They’ve got a really good shooting team and when we played them earlier, they weren’t quite as hot,” Ethan coach Tom Young said. “But you have to pick your poison again, you either have to stop Reiner or change defenses a few times. It seemed like every time we changed it, it didn’t work.”

Ethan’s junior Karly Gustafson powered the Rustlers and finished with 34 points, including a stretch of 19 straight points.

“She’s their main scorer,” Brouwer said. “She always has been for a long time. We just had to switch up our defense a little bit and once we did, the game went a lot easier.”

The Rustlers received scoring from only four other players in the game, but it was the first extended minutes for everybody except Gustafson, who was playing in her fourth state tournament. Ethan will return everybody from this season’s team.

“Karly’s put the time in the gym and she’s got the experience,” Young said. “But I have high hopes for these other kids. I think the whole group has potential to get better. We have to get better at certain facets of the game.”

For TDA, it graduates Brouwer, Erica Koster, Brianna Stoebner, Paige Neugebauer, Haley Dufek and Riley Schafers.

“It was a great way to end our career and that’s we always wanted,” Brouwer said.
