Tabor, Winner play host to Class B Legion regionals

Winner/Colome shortstop Jackson Kinzer throws to first base after fielding a ground ball during an American Legion baseball game at Alexandria on Friday.

The path to the state tournament begins this week.

The American Legion Class B regional playoffs begin this week as teams look to qualify for the state tournament from Aug. 2 through Aug. 6 in Lennox.

Two of those regional tournaments will be held locally, with the Region 4B tournament being held in Tabor beginning Wednesday and the Region 7B tournament in Winner on Thursday.

The Region 4B was originally slated to be in Alexandria, but a light standard was blown down behind home plate, making the field unplayable for the week.

Tabor looks for home field advantage in Region 4B

Alexandria battles McCook/Miner in the first game at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, with Parkston and Chamberlain to follow at approximately 5:30 p.m. Tabor will play the winner of Alexandria and McCook/Miner in the nightcap at 8 p.m.

Tabor (12-7) hopes to benefit from home field advantage, having gone 5-0 at home this season and holds wins over Parkston and Alexandria this season.

Christian Uecker has been stellar at the plate and on the mound for the Bluebirds, hitting .417 with 19 RBIs, while also totaling a 1.76 ERA and fanning 27 batters in 15 2/3 innings this season.

McCook/Miner enters on a hot streak, going 6-2 in July, while hitting .313 as a team for the season. Sam Gillespie leads the charge, hitting a team-best .414 and driving in 17 runs. Isaac Feldhaus has a team-high 20 RBIs, while also hitting .339.

Alexandria enters the postseason 7-14, but won its last two games of the regular season against Colton and a come-from-behind win over Winner/Colome on Friday. The Angels did fall to McCook/Miner, 13-3, on June 26.

Two games are scheduled for Thursday, including the championship semifinals at 8 p.m. Elimination games are to be played Friday at 5:30 and 8 p.m. The championship game is slated for 6 p.m. Saturday, and if necessary, a second game at 8 p.m.

Hot-hitting Winner/Colome draws third seed

Winner/Colome earned the third draw in the tournament and opens up play Thursday against No. 2 Spearfish, with first pitch 30 minutes after the conclusion of No. 4 Stanley County and No. 5 Gregory County at 12:30 p.m.

The winner of Gregory County and Stanley County faces No. 1 Martin 30 minutes after the second game. The loser of Game 1 and the loser of Game 2 also square off on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Winner/Colome enters the postseason with a 13-6 record, winning all four games against regional foes, including an 8-4 win over Spearfish on June 29.

A potent Winner/Colome offensive attack features five players hitting .400 or better, led by Joren Bruun’s .462 average. Oscar Pravecek is second with a .436 average, while also hitting three home runs and knocking in a team-high 21 runs.

Jackson Kinzer is hitting .429 with 13 RBIs, while also having a team-low 1.57 ERA on the mound in 22 1/3 innings pitched. He is part of a three-man rotation with Carter Brickman and Jacob Beckers that has combined for a 2.59 ERA in 80 innings this season.

Three games are slated for Thursday, with the championship semifinals beginning at 2 p.m. and two consolation bracket games to follow. The championship game is scheduled for noon on Saturday and Game 2 to follow if the loser of the first has one loss.
