Sunshine League roundup: Cardinals take down Raptors 8-5

MOUNT VERNON -- Zach London had a two-RBI double and picked up the save as the Mount Vernon amateur baseball team defeated Dimock/Emery 8-5 in Sunshine League play Sunday night in Mount Vernon.

MOUNT VERNON -- Zach London had a two-RBI double and picked up the save as the Mount Vernon amateur baseball team defeated Dimock/Emery 8-5 in Sunshine League play Sunday night in Mount Vernon.

London recorded the final four outs on the mound for the Cardinals, striking out four Raptors.

Nick Young got the win after pitching the first six innings for Mount Vernon. He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Freddy Ellis added two hits for Mount Vernon.

Brad Bartscher took the loss on the mound for Dimock/Emery. He allowed eight runs on six hits and five walks. He struck out three.

Sam Pischke had three hits for the Raptors, including two doubles. Gary Earl added two hits on the night.

Mount Vernon improved to 2-1 in the Sunshine League and plays its first non-league game against Plankinton at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Mount Vernon.

Parkston Mudcats 11, Platte 9

PLATTE -- After trailing 8-1 through two innings, the Parkston Mudcats battled back to defeat Platte 11-9 in Sunshine League play Sunday in Platte.

Bo Bruinsma was tagged for eight runs in 1 1/3 innings on the mound and was relieved by Brady Nolz who picked up the win with 7 2/3 innings of one-hit ball.

Nolz allowed one run while walking six. He struck out six hitters.

Audie Kuipers was the losing pitcher for Platte after coming out of the bullpen.

Trevor Freudenthal led the Mudcats at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Nolz added three singles while Jeff Harris and Spencer Freudenthal both recorded two hits.

Miles Kuiper and Keith Kutler each hit two-run homers for Platte, who fell to 0-1 in the Sunshine League.

The Mudcats improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in league play and take on Kimball at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Parkston.

Alexandria 10,

Corsica/Stickney 0

CORSICA -- Alexandria improved to 2-1 in the Sunshine League with a 10-0 win over Corsica/Stickney Sunday night.

Pierce Smith was the winning pitcher, going six innings and striking out six.

Three hitters had multiple hits for Alexandria as John Greicar went 3-for-4 and Tad DeRouchey and Trevor Doyle each went 2-for-4.

Alexandria improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Alexandria's next Sunshine League game is against Mitchell at 8 p.m. Friday in Mitchell.

Corsica/Stickney's next league game is against the Parkston Rock Bass at 7 p.m. Sunday in Parkston.
