State volleyball roundup: Warner sweeps Faith to set up showdown with Northwestern

RAPID CITY -- Defending Class B state champion and fifth-seeded Warner advanced to the semifinals after sweeping No. 4 Faith in the first round of the state tournament on Thursday, 25-18, 25-20 and 25-14.

Warner (28-9): Jennifer Aman put down 17 kills, while Ava Nilsson dished out 29 assists and came up with 13 digs. Danille Seymour also added nine kills. The Monarchs face No. 1 Northwestern in a rematch of the last three Class B title games at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

Faith (30-4): Aiyana Byrd had 12 kills and Sydnie Schauer had 18 assists and 10 digs. The Longhorns play Bridgewater-Emery at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Faulkton Area 3, Chester Area 2

RAPID CITY -- Seventh-seeded Faulkton Area stunned No. 2 Chester Area in a come-from-behind win to advance to the Class B semifinals, 25-19, 21-25, 11-25, 25-22 and 17-15.

Faulkton Area (23-5): Peyton Melius put down 26 kills and came up with 13 digs, while Isabel Aesoph added 22 digs, 17 assists and five kills. Morgan Melius had six kills and nine digs and Abby Vetch had 20 digs. The Trojans play Burke at 7:15 p.m. on Friday.

Chester Area (24-8): Makenna Larson had 19 kills and 25 digs, while Kenna Brown had 40 assists and 10 digs. Ella Pry pitched in 11 kills and Jayda Kenyon had 10 kills. The Flyers face Ethan at 3:45 p.m. on Friday.

Huron 3, Sioux Falls Lincoln 2

RAPID CITY -- Huron was on the brink of elimination, but the No. 3 seed in Class AA rallied to win the final two sets against No. 6 Sioux Falls Lincoln, 25-22, 14-25, 23-25, 25-19 and 15-11.

Huron (19-6): Brooke Schiltz had 14 kills and 12 digs, while Mikena Moore had 11 kills and 13 digs and Libby Rounds pitched in 11 kills. Tenley Buddenhagen also had 41 assists and 13 digs. The Tigers face Sioux Falls O’Gorman at 7:15 p.m. on Friday.

Sioux Falls Lincoln (14-10): Baily Plourde had 14 kills, six digs and three blocks, while Sydni Wietfeld had 15 assists, 11 digs and 10 kills. Caelyn Taylor had 10 kills and Chloe Brown had 19 assists. The Patriots play Rapid City Stevens at 3:45 p.m. on Friday.

Miller 3, EPJ 0

RAPID CITY -- Kadye Fernholz hammered 27 kills and 11 digs as top-seeded Miller rolled past No. 8 Elk Point-Jefferson in the first round of the Class A state volleyball tournament on Thursday, 25-20, 25-12 and 25-20.

Miller (33-2): Storm Johnsen added 12 kills and 12 digs, while VonnaGail Schlechter had five kills and 11 digs. Rachel Oligmueller also handed out 45 assists. The Rustlers play Sioux Falls Christian in a rematch of last year’s Class A title game at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

Elk Point-Jefferson (21-13): Sophia Giorgio handed out 24 assists and came up with 10 digs, while Riley Donnelly had seven kills and eight digs and Kenna Curry had eight kills. The Huskies play Winner at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Watertown 3, Harrisburg 0

RAPID CITY -- Watertown scored a two-point victory over No. 9 Harrisburg and the top seed in Class AA never looked back in a sweep, 25-23, 25-10 and 25-21.

Watertown (26-2): Maggie Heesch had 13 kills, Sophie Tietz had 11 kills and Mckenzie Buisker added 10 kills. Meghan Heggelund chipped in eight kills and Alexx Bayles had 37 assists. The Arrows play Sioux Falls Washington at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

Harrisburg (15-11): Abbrielle Carolan had 13 assists and Mercedes Covrig had 10 assists, while Hallie Mertz had six kills. The Tigers play Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Sioux Falls Washington 3, Sioux Falls Roosevelt 1

RAPID CITY -- Fifth-seeded Sioux Falls Washington broke a 1-1 tie by winning the final two sets against No. 4 Sioux Falls Roosevelt in the first round of the Class AA tournament, 25-6, 16-25, 25-22 and 25-17.

Sioux Falls Washington (20-8): Sydney Schetnan had 13 kills, while Laura Petterson had nine kills and 10 digs. Morgan Bischoff also added 31 assists. The Warriors play Watertown at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

Sioux Falls Roosevelt (19-11): Abby Ward had 11 kills and 12 digs and Elizabeth Denevan had 25 assists. The Rough Riders face Harrisburg at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Sioux Falls O’Gorman 3, Rapid City Stevens 0

RAPID CITY -- Second-seeded Sioux Falls O’Gorman swept defending Class AA state champion Rapid City Stevens, 25-17, 25-17 and 25-16.

Sioux Falls O’Gorman (25-4): Emma Ronsiek had 23 of O’Gorman’s 38 kills, while Raegen Reilly had 24 assists and six digs and Emma McKay had 14 digs. The Knights face Huron at 7:15 p.m. on Friday.

Rapid City Stevens (22-11): Julia Lee had 14 assists and 10 digs. Four different Stevens players had four kills. The Raiders face Sioux Falls Lincoln at 3:45 p.m. on Friday.

Dakota Valley 3, Madison 0

RAPID CITY -- The No. 2 seed in Class A advanced to the semifinals as Dakota Valley squeaked out a pair of sets, before pulling away from No. 7 Madison, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-16.

Dakota Valley (30-3): Rachel Rosenquist had nine kills, Rachel Wente had eight kills and Sophia Atchison had seven kills. Ally Beresford added 28 assists and 14 digs. The Panthers face McCook Central/Montrose at 7:15 p.m. on Friday.

Madison (23-9): Abby Brooks had eight kills, while Kendra Leighton and Grace Nelson had six apiece. Nelson also had 12 kills and six digs. The Bulldogs face Groton Area at 3:45 p.m. on Friday.
