Opening day of state volleyball tournament gets underway in Rapid City

RAPID CITY — After losing the first two sets, No. 4 seeded Brandon Valley came back to beat Pierre in Thursday’s Class AA quarterfinals, securing a place in the state semifinals in a 3-2 victory at the Summit Arena. Set scores were 20-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-11

Brandon Valley (23-9): Liz Kopp led the team with 45 set assists and five digs. Taylor Stemen had 17 kills and 10 digs, while Hannah Parliament recorded 11 kills and 16 digs. Josey Wickersham and Kazi Ellingson had nine kills respectively, with Wickersham adding 16 digs. Mya Heji had six kills and Brooke Moeller had 13 digs as well. Brandon Valley will play No. 1 Sioux Falls Washington in the Class AA semifinals Friday.

Pierre (16-6): For Pierre, Lily Sanchez had 13 kills, 26 set assists, and nine digs, with Ayverie Kaiser contributing 11 kills and 20 digs. Reese Terwillinger added 11 kills, while Remington Price had 12 digs and five kills. Alesia Christopherson had 12 assists as well as seven digs and Addison Cumbow had a team high 25 digs. Pierre will play No. 8 Huron in the Class AA consolation round Friday.

Sioux Falls Washington 3, Huron 1

RAPID CITY — Top-seeded Sioux Falls Washington dropped the opening set against No. 8 seed Huron, but rallied to convincingly win the next three sets for a Class AA state quarterfinal victory Thursday afternoon at Summit Arena in Rapid City. Set scores were 25-27, 25-10, 25-14 and 25-14.

Sioux Falls Washington (29-1): Joslyn Richardson had 24 kills and 13 digs to lead all attackers in the match, while Shelby Kinzer added 11 kills and Ellie Walker had nine kills, three aces and 14 digs. In all, the Warriors had 11 service aces, including three from Macie Malchow, who also had 50 set assists. Jadyn Schetnan had a team-high 21 digs. The Warriors will take on Brandon Valley in the Class AA quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Friday.


Huron (14-11): Emily Dale had 14 kills and four blocks for the Tigers, while Brynn Gose had eight kills and nine digs. Hamtyn Heinz had 30 set assists and Bryn Huber had 16 digs, with Heavan Gainey adding four total blocks. The Tigers will meet Eastern South Dakota Conference foe Pierre in the Class AA consolation round at 1 p.m. Friday.

Sioux Falls O’Gorman 3, Sioux Falls Lincoln 0

RAPID CITY — In a Class AA Sioux Falls clash, O’Gorman swept Lincoln to advance to the semifinals of the state tournament. Set scores were 25-18, 25-19 and 25-18.

Sioux Falls O’Gorman (21-4): Bergen Reilly had 23 assists, seven aces, and five digs, while Macy Matheson had a team-high eight kills and five digs. The trio of Emily Dowling, Isabella Steffel, and Brogan Beck all had five kills. Gabriella Jones led the team in digs with nine. The Knights will play No. 3 Sioux Falls Roosevelt in the Class AA semifinals Friday.

Sioux Falls Lincoln (19-12): Baily Plourde had eight kills and 11 digs, while Samantha Zeeck set her teammates up for 20 assists and had four digs. Taryn Krisch, Joy Bilal, Anna Engels, and Nyareal Kutey all had three kills respectively, with Kirsch adding seven digs. Kate Tollinger had five digs as well. The Warriors will play Harrisburg in the Class AA consolation round on Nov. 19.

Sioux Falls Roosevelt 3, Harrisburg 1

RAPID CITY — No. 3 Sioux Falls Roosvelt won three of four closely contested sets in a Class AA state quarterfinal match on Thursday night at Summit Arena. Set scores were 25-21, 25-21, 23-25 and 25-23

Sioux Falls Roosevelt (21-9): Abigail Ward had 16 kills and 11 digs to pace the Rough Riders, with Mya Vandrovec adding 13 kills and three blocks in the win. Zoie Husman had nine kills, five aces and 15 digs for Roosevelt, which also had 31 assists, two aces and 25 digs from Elizabeth Denevan. The Rough Riders will face No. 2 O’Gorman on Friday night for a spot in the state championship match.

Harrisburg (19-10): Abby Meister and Morrisen Samuels each had 13 kills to share the Tigers’ team lead. Kayleigh Hybertson added 10 kills for the Tigers, who had four kills, 25 assists and 10 digs from Maggie Meister. The Tigers will face Sioux Falls Lincoln in a Class AA consolation match on Friday.

Class A

Garretson 3, Elkton-Lake Benton 2

RAPID CITY — Second-seeded Garretson rallied from a 2-0 set deficit to win a Class A state quarterfinal match Thursday night against No. 7-seeded Elkton-Lake Benton. Set scores were 23-25, 18-25, 25-15, 25-20, 15-5.


Garretson (28-1): Lily Ranschau had 18 kills and 17 digs for the Blue Dragons, while Logan Bly had 14 kills and seven blocks in the victory. Jaelyn Benson added 41 set assists and 19 digs and Kaylin Koch had 11 kills for Garretson, which had 11 blocks to ELB’s three in the match. The Blue Dragons will face Dakota Valley in the Class A semifinal on Friday.

Elkton-Lake Benton (22-12): The Elks were led by 13 kills and 20 digs from Rachael Krog. Kailyn Drietz had 12 kills and Tevan Erickson had 34 assists and 16 digs. ELB will play in the Class A consolation round Friday against Hamlin.


Dakota Valley 3, Hamlin 0

RAPID CITY — No. 3 Dakota Valley swept Hamlin in its opening match at the Class A state tournament Thursday night, advancing to the state semifinals. Set scores were 29-27, 25-21 and 25-15.

Dakota Valley (27-8): Jorja Van Den Hul had 13 kills, while Sophie Tuttle added 11 kills, two aces and 12 digs. Sammi Archer had 18 digs and Logan Miller had a match-high 39 assists. The Panthers will take on No. 2 Garretson in the second Class A semifinal on Friday.

Hamlin (26-7): Ally Abraham had 12 kills to lead the Chargers, while Grace Everson had 12 assists and two aces. Alyssa West had 14 digs for Hamlin, which will take on Elkton-Lake Benton in a Class A consolation round match on Friday.

Class B

Colman-Egan 3, Chester Area 2

RAPID CITY — No. 5-seeded Colman-Egan won three-straight sets after dropping the first two to earn a Class B quarterfinal victory over No. 4-seeded Chester Area on Thursday. Set scores were 23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 26-24 and 15-12.

Colman-Egan (25-8): Mackenzie Hemmer had a match-high 20 kills and 18 digs while Hailey Larson had 13 kills and 18 digs. Daniela Lee had nine kills and 25 digs, along with four assists while Faith Taggart six kills and five digs. Lanie Mousel had 19 assists and nine digs while Ava Mousel had 14 assists and 17 digs. The Hawks will face Platte-Geddes in the Class B semifinal on Friday.


Chester Area (27-5): Breckyn Ewoldt had 18 kills and seven digs while Jayda Kenyon notched 18 kills as well. Addison Bates added 16 kills and two blocks while Lily VanHal had 12 kills, 12 digs and a match-high 43 assists. Jacy Wolf had 16 digs while Carly Becker had 22 assists and 14 digs. Emery Larson added a match-high 27 digs and Kaylor Geraets added 23 digs. The Flyers will play in the Class B consolation round Friday against Burke.


Warner 3, Aberdeen Christian 0

RAPID CITY — No. 2-seeded Warner earned a Class B quarterfinal victory Thursday night with a three-set sweep over Region 1B rival Aberdeen Christian. Set scores were 25-15, 25-16 and 25-18.

Warner (31-5): Jennifer Aman had 17 kills, with Kyra Marcuson scoring 16 kills and 10 digs. Ava Nilsson had 38 assists and two aces, while Courtney Bjorgaard had 18 digs for Warner. The Monarchs will face Faulkton Area in the second Class B semifinal on Friday.

Aberdeen Christian (23-4): Hanna Miller had seven kills for the Knights, while Kaylee Block had 14 set assists. Joy Rohrbach had 15 digs for Aberdeen Christian, which will play in the Class B consolation round Friday against Arlington.

Faulkton Area 3, Arlington 1

RAPID CITY — Sixth-seeded Faulkton Area knocked off No. 3 Arlington Thursday night in four sets for a trip to the Class B semifinals. Set scores were 25-22, 28-26, 22-25 and 25-17.

Faulkton Area (27-6): Isabel Aesoph had 23 kills and 14 digs, and teammate Sayna Heitmann had 19 kills to lead the Trojans in the winning effort. Camryn Deiter and Gabby Kast each had 23 assists, with Kast picking up three aces and four blocks, and Deiter adding nine digs and two blocks. Carley Cotton had 22 digs for the Trojans, who face No. 2 seed Warner in the Class B semifinals on Friday at 8:45 p.m. Central.

Arlington (30-6): Hadley Carlson had 26 kills, four aces and 31 digs in the effort for the Cardinals, who also had seven kills and seven digs from Erin Haufschild. Grace Parry had 40 assists and 12 digs and Natalie Burns had 16 digs and two aces for Arlington, which will take on Aberdeen Christian in a Class B consolation match at approximately 2:45 p.m. Friday.
