State Legion roundup: Webster upsets Spearfish

WEBSTER - As the host community for the Class B State Legion baseball tournament, Webster gained an automatic berth into this year's tournament.

On Friday, they proved they belonged.

Webster Post 40 topped Spearfish Post 164 3-1, aided by Braden Rithmiller's complete-game four-hitter on the mound.

Rithmiller struck out 11 batters and threw 120 pitches in the win, walking one.

The game was scoreless through the first five innings, but things picked up in the sixth inning. Spearfish scored the game's first run in the top of the sixth. Webster answered with a Chandler Day double to left field to plate Chase Amdahl and Nick Ketchum. Post 40 added one more in the inning and that proved to be enough to get the win.

Day finished 2-for-4 in the victory.

Jaxon Rosencranz, Donovan Bailey, Kobee Farrokhi and Taylor Janovy each had a hit for Spearfish.

Webster will play Humboldt/Hartford at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Spearfish will play Vermillion at 1:30 p.m. today in an elimination game.

Redfield 6, Madison 1

WEBSTER - Evan Millar threw a complete game five-hitter and recorded 12 strikeouts to lift Redfield to an opening round victory at the Class B State Legion baseball tournament.

Millar threw 114 pitches in the opening game of the tournament, while allowing one earned run in the fifth inning. He helped his own cause with the bat as well, going 2-for-4 and scoring three runs and stole two bases. Bennett Osborn had four hits in the game and drove in two runs, along with Chase Bixler, who knocked in two runs for Redfield. Jack Aesoph had two hits and scored two runs.

For Madison, Riley Janke had two hits and Tanner Burg had the lone RBI in the loss. Hunter Jamison took the loss for Madison, throwing 3 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, five runs (three earned) and striking out four.

Redfield (21-7) will take on Winner/Colome or Milbank at 5 p.m. today in the winner's bracket, while Madison (14-10) takes on either Winner/Colome or Milbank at approximately 1:30 p.m. today in an elimination game.

Humboldt/Hartford 5, Vermillion 3

WEBSTER - Blake Svoboda allowed 14 hits for Humboldt/Hartford in Friday's opening game at the Class B State Legion baseball tournament but he struck out 15 batters, helping his team to a 5-3 win over Vermillion in Webster.

Svoboda threw 8 1/3 innings, allowing three runs and walking just one batter, while throwing 134 pitches. Jonah Rechtenbaugh recorded the final two outs for the save for Humboldt/Hartford, who broke through for four runs in the first inning. . At the plate, Joseph Hanisch and Dylan Masterson each had two hits, while Rechtenbaugh scored two runs.

Vermillion got four hits out of Riley Johnson and three from Brandon Mockler in the game. Billy Mount took the loss for Vermillion, pitching seven innings, allowing eight hits, five runs and striking out seven.

Humboldt/Hartford (22-8) will take on Webster in today's late game at 7:30 p.m. Vermillion (19-9) will take on Spearfish at 1:30 p.m. today in an elimination game.
