State football roundup: Pierre blows by Brookings for fourth straight title

VERMILLION -- Pierre won its fourth consecutive Class 11AA state championship with a 38-6 win over top-seeded Brookings on Friday behind three second-quarter touchdown passes by sophomore Lincoln Kienholz.

Kienholz opened the scoring with a 1-yard run, but the Bobcats responded with a 9-yard scamper by Josh Buri with 1 minute, 32 seconds left in the first quarter.

Regan Bollweg caught a 3-yard touchdown from Kienholz less than a minute into the second quarter and Kienholz found Jack Merkwan on a 29-yard catch. Kienholz and Bollweg would also connect again for a 10-yard score with less than two minutes to play in the first half as third-seeded Pierre (9-2) took a 28-6 lead into halftime.

Kienholz 19 of 19 for 151 yards to win Joe Robbie MVP honors, while Maguire Raske had 164 yards and a touchdown on 28 rushing attempts. Merkwan had four receptions for 64 yards.

Buri had 122 yards and 16 attempts for the previously unbeaten Bobcats. The Governors held Brookings (11-1) quarterback Jaxon Bowes to 4 of 13 passing for 24 yards and two interceptions.

Tea Area 35, Canton 16

VERMILLION -- Tea Area scored three touchdowns in the opening quarter on Saturday to knock off defending state champion Canton for its second Class 11A state title in three years.

Austin Lake surpassed 100 yards passing and rushing to earn the Joe Robbie MVP for the top-seeded Titans, going 7 of 10 passing for 142 yards and two scores, while rushing for 116 yards and two touchdowns on eight attempts.

Lake found Conner Mulder for an 11-yard touchdown less than two minutes into the game. Tea Area (11-0) struck again 82 seconds later on a 90-yard touchdown run by Kaden Johnson. Lake would add a 30-yard touchdown run in the waning moments of the quarter and hit Cael Lundin for a 14-yard score in the second quarter to grab a 28-0 lead at halftime.

Lake also raced 63 yards for a touchdown on the opening play of the second half.

Johnson finished with 128 yards on 13 attempts, while Lundin had 74 yards on three receptions.

Canton (8-3) got on the board with a 1-yard run by Seth Peterson in the third quarter and Peterson added an 8-yard touchdown toss to Payton Eben in the fourth quarter.

Peterson was 8 of 25 for 96 yards and two interceptions and Eben had 73 yards on five catches. The C-Hawks were held to 81 yards rushing.

Brandon Valley 35, Harrisburg 14

VERMILLION -- Brandon Valley won its second Class 11AAA championship after outscoring Harrisburg 21-0 in the second half on Saturday.

The second-seeded Lynx, who were making their fourth championship game appearance in five years, outgained the No. 5 Tigers 371-36 on the ground, led by Tate Johnson’s 225 yards and two touchdowns on 27 attempts.

Brandon Valley (9-1) never trailed in the game, but Harrisburg answered both scores in the first half, including a 2-yard touchdown run by Jacob Knuth with 19 seconds left in the second quarter to tie the game 14-14 at halftime.

Joe Kolbeck gave the Lynx the lead for good with a 67-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The quarterback was named Joe Robbie MVP after rushing for 143 yards and two touchdowns on 11 attempts and going 4-for-7 for 45 yards and a score through the air.

Knuth went 29 of 42 for 301 yards and three interceptions for Harrisburg, which finished 7-4.
