State amateur baseball quarterfinals: A look at the final eight teams

Everything you need to know about the four quarterfinal games, played Thursday and Friday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.

Action from the Class B state amateur baseball tournament on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 against the Garretson Blue Jays and the Plankinton Bankers at Cadwell Park.

First round: Defeated Plankinton F&M Bankers, 13-0. Garretson got a brilliant pitching performance from Aaron LaBrie, who tossed all seven innings with 13 strikeouts.

Second round: Another 10-run rule victory, knocking off Madison, 11-1. Garretson scored seven runs in the eighth inning and got three hits from Robin Chute, who was the Class B state amateur baseball tournament MVP in 2004 when he played for Vermillion.

Did you know? Garretson has had two pitchers throw complete games. LaBrie and Joey Fitzgerald have combined to strike out 20 batters. They each threw 109 pitches in their starts, LaBrie going seven innings and Fitzgerald in eight innings.

Quite a return: Garretson qualified for the state amateur baseball tournament for 12 straight years before missing out in 2021. In 2020, the Bluejays were defeated at state in the second round by Winner/Colome.

Mount Vernon

First round: Defeated Redfield Dairy Queen, 10-0. Mount Vernon led 6-0 after two innings and never looked back. Bradley Dean got the win for the Mustangs.

Second round: Defeated Milbank, 3-2. Mount Vernon scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and pitcher Luke Tiesler tossed a complete game to send the Mustangs to the quarterfinals with a one-run victory.

Did you know? Chase Hetland, who bats second in the lineup, leads Mount Vernon with four tournament hits, all singles, and five RBIs.

Did you see this? Tiesler’s second-round win was one of his many complete games in his pitching career.

Unknown opponents: Mount Vernon and Garretson have not faced each other this year. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11.

First round: Cruised past Wessington Springs, 17-2. Jordan Gau and Pierce Smith each had three hits as the District 5B champion Angels scored in every inning except the fifth.


Second round: Eked past Platte, 4-3, in a battle of Sunshine League foes. Smith had a two-run homer to tie the game at 3, and Jordan Gau’s ninth-inning double to score Tyson Gau for the go-ahead score.

Did you know? Jordan Gau, who hit .292 during the season, leads the Angels’ strong offensive output at the state tournament with six hits, including two doubles. Four players on Alexandria’s roster have at least three hits through two tournament games.

First round: Lennox scored four runs in the ninth inning to beat Wynot, Neb., 7-4. Cam Wulf had a team-high three hits and Drew Sweeter pitched three shutout innings in relief.

Second round: In another ninth-inning rally, Lennox scored three in its final at-bat to beat Canova 6-5. Corey Vasquez had a single to score Wulf and Sweeter to win the game.

Did you know? Walker Hultgren, who hits in the No. 3 spot and is a Dakota State baseball player, has a team-high four state tournament hits for Lennox. He hit .376 during the regular season.

A tip of the cap: Lennox is one of the few teams to list its bat boy in the state tournament roster program. Ace Reilly wears No. 16 for the team.

The matchup: Alexandria and Lennox, which each got into the quarterfinals with 1-run victories, match up at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11.

First Round: Dominating 13-0 win over Humboldt/Hartford . Sam Arend had seven RBIs and a massive home run.

Second Round: Some late runs led to an 8-6 win over Salem. Phil Johnson started the second straight game for Dimock/Emery, and he also drove in two runs in the sixth to give the Raptors a nice cushion.

Did you know? The Raptors drew seven walks in their second-round win over Salem. It’s a significant contrast from the first round, when Sam Michels recorded the team’s only walk in the game against Humboldt/Hartford.

Did you see this? Dimock/Emery is using a nice mix of young players and veteran talent to make a deep run at this year’s state tournament. Read all about this year’s squad, which is hoping to make a second straight trip to the semifinals.

Dell Rapids Mudcats

First Round: With six hits and seven walks, the Mudcats tacked on two runs in the third, fifth and ninth innings in a 7-0 win over Northville. Dell Rapids pitchers Dalton Allen and Dalton Lehnen limited Northville to just two hits in nine innings.

Second Round: The Mudcats led by seven runs after five innings and held on for an 8-6 victory over Larchwood, Iowa. Kris Regas paced the Mudcats on the mound, throwing seven innings and 125 pitches, allowing five hits, five runs (two earned) and striking out 10.

Did you know? The defending state champion Mudcats only have two players with more than one hit thus far this tournament. Chad Hunt has three singles and Trevor Freudenthal has two singles and a double. The team has drawn 13 walks in two wins.

Familiar foes: Dimock/Emery and the Dell Rapids Mudcats have matched up a number of times at the state tournament in the past decade. They haven’t played either of the past two years, but they met in 2019, when the Mudcats won in the first round, 10-4. Dell Rapids also defeated the Raptors, 4-2, in the first round in 2017 and a 3-1 second-round win in 2016.

First round: Cruised past the Redfield Pheasants, 16-1, behind four hits from Austin Calhoon and three hits from Austin Richey and three from pick-up player Luke Bamberg.

Second round: Staged a late rally for an exciting ninth-inning, come-from-behind victory over Lake Norden.

Did you know? What a pick-up player Bamberg has been for the Pheasants. Bamberg, who plays for Corsica/Stickney, has four hits for Winner/Colome, including the game-winning two-RBI single against Lake Norden on Wednesday night.

Kimball/White Lake

First round: Trent Wookey had three of Kimball/White Lake’s 12 hits in a 7-2 win over Castlewood in the final first-round game.

Second round: Zak Wallner pitched a second gem and helped Kimball/White Lake to a 2-1 win over last year’s Class B runner-up Flandreau.

Did you know? Wallner’s stat line in two victories has been impressive. In two complete-game victories, he has 21 strikeouts, and though he's allowed 17 hits, he's surrendered only three earned runs on 295 total pitches.

Who’s headed into the semifinals? Winner/Colome vs. Kimball/White Lake is the final quarterfinal game, set to start at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12. The teams matched up in last year’s quarterfinals, with Winner/Colome advancing with a 5-0 victory to help the Pheasants qualify for their third straight semifinal appearance.
