The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team dropped a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader against Northwestern College on Tuesday at McWhirter Field. The Tigers lost 9-8 in the Game 1, while they dropped a 13-7 decision in Game 2.
In Game 1, Stephanie Gabel smacked a grand slam for a 5-0 lead in the first inning. However, Northwestern knotted the score at 5-5 with a four runs in the fifth inning. The Red Raiders tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh for a 9-5 advantage.
In the top of the seventh inning, Reagan Nebel started a rally with an RBI double to center field. After Monique Gomez scored on a wild pitch, Adriana Thomason plated Nebel on a sac fly. However, the next two DWU batters were retired to end the threat.
Nebel finished two hits. Reagan Grossi, Allison McElveny and Meghan Daffern added hits. Daffern started the first 4 2/3 innings for DWU, scattering eight hits, allowing three earned runs and striking out one batter. Alyssa Burke pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing three hits, four earned runs and had three strikeouts.
In Game 2, the Tigers allowed at least one run in six innings, including four in the second inning and three apiece in the sixth and seventh frames. DWU’s Haley Linke finished 2 of 3 with three RBIs, while Gabel went 3 of 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Tigers will host Midland University in a 3 p.m. doubleheader Friday at McWhirter Field.
