ABERDEEN -- Competing in the Presentation Dome Classic on Friday, the Dakota Wesleyan University softball team took down Dakota State, 7-4, and then upset No. 10 Valley City State, 3-1.
Against the Trojans, DWU did all of its scoring in the third inning. It pushed seven runs across, as Alyssa Garcia paved the way. She went 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Mikael Smith and Madeline Else each added a pair of hits, as the Tigers finished with eight as a team.
Kyllie Ramirez protected the lead, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits in 3.1 innings to pick up the win. Devany Farris tossed 3.2-shutout frames to close out the game.
DWU rode strong pitching to an upset win over VCSU. Meghan Daffern allowed one earned run in a five-inning start to pick up the win. Farris threw two scoreless innings to finish the game.
At the plate, the Tigers struck early with a three-run first inning. Stephanie Gabel went 2-for-3 with a three-run blast.
DWU (6-2) plays Mayville State and Dickinson State today in Aberdeen.
