BROOKINGS -- A couple of slow starts cost the Mitchell High School softball team on Monday.

Brookings jumped out to a six-run lead in both games, beating Mitchell 8-4 in Game 1 and 11-0 in the second game.

The Bobcats grew their lead to 6-0 in the second inning of the first game, then held off Mitchell as the Kernels scored three in the bottom of the second.

Jacey Linke scored on an error to start the scoring, followed by Morgan Schneider hitting an RBI double then stealing home. Keirstyn Krcil finished with a team-high three hits, while Cameryn Krogman and Kathleen Nash both had two hits.

Linke took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on 14 hits and two walks. She struck out three.

Mitchell was held to one hit in the second game. Meanwhile, the Bobcats scored six runs in the first, three in the third and tacked on two insurance runs in the fourth.

Krcil suffered the loss, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits. She also walked five and struck out a pair. Ellie Kisor had the team’s only hit.

Mitchell (2-16) hosts Watertown at 6 p.m. today.
