Big innings cost DWU softball in doubleheader at Northwestern
ORANGE CITY, Iowa—The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team dropped a Great Plains Athletic Conference twin bill to Northwestern College on Tuesday.
The Tigers lost a lead in Game 1, but the Red Raiders prevailed with a big fourth inning to win 10-8. In the second game, Northwestern scored eight runs in the second inning and DWU (11-27, 6-12 GPAC) could not overcome the deficit in an 11-3 loss.
In the first game, the Red Raiders jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Tigers battled back with seven runs on five hits, while Northwestern (13-18, 6-6) committed three errors.
Andriana Sprakel went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Amber Budmark, Chaydon Metzger, Karly Severance and Julia Kelley had an RBI apiece.
In the second game, DWU took a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second, but the Red Raiders erupted for eight runs on six hits. Madison Beaver did half of the damage with a grand slam to capture the lead.
Sprakel went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Budmark was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Severance went 1-for-2 with an RBI in a lost effort for the Tigers. Sierra Haage took the loss after surrendering five runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings in the circle.
DWU hosts Jamestown in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. today on senior day at McWhirter Field.
