Pitching leads DWU softball to sweep over Chargers
Dakota Wesleyan University and Briar Cliff finished a recently postponed doubleheader on Tuesday at McWhirter Field. The Tigers used strong pitching to sweep the Chargers, winning 10-6 in the first game and 3-2 to finish the twinbill.
DWU entered Game 1 trailing 6-3 in the third inning, but it exploded for a seven-run frame. Karly Severance highlighted the big inning with a three-run home run, as she finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Andriana Sprakel also recorded two hits to help DWU finish with eight as a team. Stephanie Gabel also drove in two runs.
Alyson VanderPol replaced Sierra Haage after the first inning a week ago, then finished the job on Monday. She allowed one earned run in six innings for the Tigers to earn the win.
VanderPol allowed two earned runs in 3 2/3 innings in her Game 2 start, with Haage shutting down Briar Cliff in relief this time. Haage tossed 3 1/3 shutout innings.
VanderPol helped herself at the plate, too, hitting a two-RBI single to give DWU a 3-2 lead in the fifth.
DWU (9-23, 4-8 GPAC) plays a doubleheader against Hastings at 8 p.m. Saturday in Aberdeen.
