SIOUX FALLS -- The Mitchell High School softball team came out of the South Dakota softball state tournament over the weekend with one win and a seventh-place finish.
The Kernels cruised by Yankton 11-1 to start the tournament, being led by Tori Misiaszek in the circle and at the plate. She earned the win, allowing a run on three hits and striking out eight, while also recording three hits. Keirstyn Krcil, Haley Linke and Jordyn Cranny all had three hits, as well, to help the Kernels tie a school-record of 17 hits as a team.
Sioux Falls Roosevelt shut out Mitchell in the second game, though. Mitchell was held to three hits, while Misiaszek gave up seven runs (four earned) on eight hits in the loss. She, Hannah Sibson and Kassidy Overweg each had a hit.
Mitchell’s bats got going against Watertown, but its seven hits only produced two runs in a close 3-2 loss. Cranny led the team with two hits, while Sibson, Misiaszek, Krcil, Kate Nash and Ally Barlean all had a hit. Misiaszek pitched again, allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits and striking out seven.
The Kernels finished the season 8-17 record, giving them their most wins since 2015. The all-tournament, all-state and Eastern South Dakota Conference teams are expected to be announced later this week.
