YANKTON -- The Mitchell High School boys soccer team couldn’t overcome a pair of injuries as it fell 8-0 to Yankton on Thursday.

“We lost our two wingers in the first 20 minutes to non-returnable injuries,” Mitchell head coach Ken Novak said. “This made us rely upon our depth chart of only six players, almost all of whom are middle school athletes and freshman.”

Despite the loss, Novak was pleased with goalie Trevor Lambert’s performance, saying he made some “remarkable saves.” Lambert held Yankton to three first-half goals and stopped 28 shots in the game.

Offensively, the Kernels’ (0-2) Dillon Robinson, Ben Ziebrath and Elijah Novak all had three shots.

“With unrelenting effort we played a very talented and physical team,” Novak said. “These young men stepped into a very uptempo game, and held their own.”

Mitchell hosts Brandon Valley at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
