SIOUX FALLS-Sioux Falls Roosevelt gained momentum as the game went on, leading to it building an insurmountable lead early in the second half en route to a 58-47 win over Mitchell on Tuesday.

The Rough Riders turned the ball over often in the first quarter, though the Kernels' (5-5) inability to hit open jumpers or finish at the rim kept them in the game. Helped by four straight turnovers near the end of the second and Mitchell's 32 percent first-half shooting, Roosevelt was able to take a 25-23 lead into halftime.

However, it quickly distanced itself from the Kernels in the second half as Mitchell failed to execute its halftime adjustments. The Rough Riders scored the first seven points of the third as they started on an 11-2 run to take a 36-25 lead. Mitchell was only able to cut one point off the deficit by quarter's end, 40-30.

"It seemed like they played with a lot more energy than we had, and we didn't match their energy," Mitchell coach Wes Morgan said.

Roosevelt (1-11) leaned on three double-digit scorers to build its lead. Hattie Giblin had 12 of her 16 points in the first half, while Macey Nielson and Kaela Martinez caught fire after the break. Nielson scored a team-high 18 points, while Martinez added 12.

"They went to the hoop on us and we didn't guard the hoop," Morgan said. "We didn't get on their right side and defensively we didn't stop anything they were trying to do."

For Mitchell, Roosevelt's speed forced them into turnovers and poor shooting throughout the night. The Kernels managed a mini 5-2 run to start the fourth, cutting the lead to 40-35, though back-to-back 3-pointers from the Rough Riders put the Kernels away for good.

Mitchell also faced foul trouble. It put Roosevelt in the double bonus in both halves, but the Rough Riders only committed nine fouls all game.

Payton Morgan led the Kernels with 14 points, while Avia Haley and Mackenzie Miller both added nine. Both Payton Morgan and Haley hit a 3 late in the fourth quarter to try to fuel a comeback.

"We ran some stuff, but they kept throwing it side-to-side and not going at the basket," coach Morgan said. "At the end of the night, if you go to the basket, it looks like a different deal. But it's too late. We dug a hole and couldn't get out of it."

Mitchell hosts Brookings at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Corn Palace.
