SIOUX FALLS-Coming off a pair of close losses to top-five teams in Class AA earlier in the week, the Mitchell High School boys basketball team capped its week with a trip to No. 5 Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Saturday.

Unfortunately for the Kernels, its defense did not have any gas left in the tank as the Rough Riders scored 20 in back-to-back quarters to start the game en route to a 81-55 romp, marking just the second time this season they have allowed 80 points or more..

"We had a lot of breakdowns on the defensive end," MHS head coach Todd Neuendorf said. "We were getting beat off the drive and they just moved to the ball until they found the open guy. We were rotating, but we were always one behind."

Mitchell (1-16) shot 51.4 percent from the field, but it wasn't enough to overcome 12 made 3-pointers and 11 offensive rebounds by Roosevelt (11-6), which put four players in double figures for the game.

Carter Jacobsen led the Kernels with 17 points, five steals and four rebounds, while Caden Hinker added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Tucker West (22 points), Aidan Evans (17), Carson Devericks (13) and Tyler Feldkamp (10) led the way for the Rough Riders.

Mitchell is back on the road Tuesday at Sioux Falls Washington.
