It was a similar song for the Mitchell boys basketball team Friday night.

Not enough shots went down and the opposition got hot, as Roosevelt hit 13 3-pointers and took apart the Kernels 68-38 in a non-conference game at the Corn Palace Friday.

Mitchell shot 34 percent in the contest and was outrebounded by 20, soundly defeated in a loss that brings the Kernels’ mark to 0-9 on the season.

“We’re looking for someone to take the bull by the horns and be a leader and score some points for us,” Mitchell coach Todd Neuendorf said. “We’re struggling. We don’t have someone who is doing that for us.”

The Kernels trailed by only five points after the first quarter but were held to just three made field goals over the next 13 minutes of game time. In that span, Roosevelt (3-3) scored 21 points in the second quarter and closed the half on a 12-0 run and then opened with a 12-3 run in the first three minutes of the third quarter, placing the lead at 43-15.

The Rough Riders - who like Mitchell struggled last season, and had only one win on the year- used their size and length in a big way, starting with 6-foot-7 center Noah Wuor, who had six points and 18 rebounds, managing to affect numerous Mitchell possessions and shot attempts.

“We went to the basket and missed layups because we thought the shots were going to get blocked off the backboard,” Neuendorf said.

Roosevelt coach Mitch Begeman credited his team’s ball movement late in the first half and getting Wuor involved for creating the open looks.

“Once we got the ball moving and got our post guy involved, we got the open looks and the shots started to fall,” Begeman said. “We were in the same position as Mitchell last year and it wasn’t a lot of fun but when you put in the work in the off-season and work like our guys have, you can reap the rewards.”

The game started with physical bent and saw the Kernels matching the Riders early, winning battles for loose balls and making hustle plays. But Neuendorf said the defense and hustle plays couldn’t win Mitchell the game without more offense.

“You can play defense as long as you want and you can preach tough defense and that’s all great but at the end of the day, you can only hold someone in check for so long,” Neuendorf said. “You have to find ways to score and we need some guys to do that for us.”

Jordon Johnson led Mitchell’s offense with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Derek Factor had eight points and eight rebounds, while Kaden Soukup scored six. For Roosevelt - which visits Brandon Valley on Tuesday - Tyler Feldkamp had a game-high 15 points off the bench, while Jackson Reiff scored 13 and Jimmy Lauer had 10 points. The Rough Riders shot 48 percent from the field and fired at a 52-percent clip on 3-pointers.

It doesn’t get much easier for Mitchell. The Kernels are at No. 2-ranked Harrisburg on Monday, which is a league-leading 5-0 in the Eastern South Dakota Conference.
