Republic's Deal named SD Sportswriter of the Year

The Daily Republic's Ryan Deal has been named South Dakota Sportswriter of the Year for 2017, the National Sports Media Association announced Tuesday.

The Daily Republic's Ryan Deal has been named South Dakota Sportswriter of the Year for 2017, the National Sports Media Association announced Tuesday.

Deal, who joined The Daily Republic in July 2016, covers a wide variety of area sports and is the newspaper's primary beat writer covering Dakota Wesleyan University football and men's basketball.

"Ryan's passion for and knowledge of South Dakota sports is spectacular," Daily Republic Managing Editor Luke Hagen said. "He's an extremely hard-working journalist who helps us deliver a great product to our readers every day."

Deal, who hails from Timber Lake and has covered South Dakota sports since 2006, was a finalist for the award for the first time.

"We're proud of Ryan for winning this award, not only because he's a great journalist but because he's a team player who wants The Daily Republic to succeed," Republic Sports Editor Marcus Traxler said. "His ability to connect with readers is unmatched in South Dakota."

The NSMA selects sportscaster and sportswriter of the year award winners each year on a state and national level. He is the fourth Daily Republic sportswriter to win the honor, joining Dean Minder (1990 and 1997) and Korrie Wenzel (2005). Dellas Cole, of Brookings Radio, was named the 2017 South Dakota Sportscaster of the Year.
